The upcoming match between Paula Badosa and Aliaksandra Sasnovich showcases two players with contrasting recent forms. Badosa, recovering from an injury-marred 2025, is searching for rhythm as she slips in the world rankings. Sasnovich, on the other hand, has had a shaky start to 2026 but received a wildcard to compete here. Despite being tied in their head-to-head record, Badosa's higher skill level could prove decisive. Her greater experience and past successes suggest she might have the upper hand in this gripping contest.

Badosa in Recovery Mode

Paula Badosa’s 2025 season ended prematurely due to injury, with just one appearance in Beijing after Wimbledon, where she was again forced to retire.

She returned to action in early 2026 but has struggled for rhythm, winning only two matches across three tournaments.

Her Australian Open exit was particularly disappointing, losing in straight sets to Oksana Selekhmeteva and failing to defend her semifinal points.

As a result, Badosa has slipped outside the top 50 and now sits at No. 65, needing a quick turnaround to halt further ranking decline.

Sasnovich Returns via Wildcard

Aliaksandra Sasnovich fell in the second round of qualifying to Sonay Kartal but earned a late lifeline after Jessica Bouzas Maneiro withdrew with a knee injury.

She has featured twice in 2026 so far, reaching the third round as a qualifier in Brisbane before losing in the first round of the Australian Open to world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini.

This is Sasnovich’s fifth appearance in Abu Dhabi. Apart from a second-round run on debut in 2021, her other campaigns ended in qualifying, but early match play this week could boost her chances.

While Sasnovich benefits from having match time under her belt, Badosa’s overall class keeps her in front. Even in the midst of a comeback, Badosa has the tools to take control and come through.
