Raphael Collignon is experiencing a remarkable season, maintaining an undefeated run in Challenger events on hard and clay surfaces. The Belgian, ranked 71st, recently secured victories against seasoned players like Grigor Dimitrov and Flavio Cobolli, catapulting his confidence ahead of a challenging face-off against the experienced Matteo Berrettini in Madrid. Berrettini, despite a dip in ranking, remains a formidable opponent with a history of top-tier performances. However, Collignon's current form suggests he could defy the odds in their upcoming clash, particularly given his impressive clay-court record.

Collignon Still Searching for Top 50

Raphael Collignon picked up some decent wins on hard courts this year, defeating Grigor Dimitrov twice and taking out Flavio Cobolli in Miami.

The Belgian saved his best performances for the Challenger circuit, winning the title in Pau where he didn’t drop a set.

The 24-year-old started the clay court swing at the Monza Challenger where he repeated the feat. He cruised to the title, winning 62-30 games, beating Dino Prizmic 7-6 6-3 in the final.

Berrettini Slipping Down the Rankings

Matteo Berrettini started the year in South America, going 3-3 without facing a Top 70 player. He was unable to get to the fourth round in Indian Wells and Miami.

The 30-year-old has seen some mixed results on his return to clay, beginning with a first round defeat to Ignacio Buse in Marrakech.

The Italian thrashed Daniil Medvedev 6-0 6-0 in Monte Carlo before a 6-3 6-2 third round defeat to Joao Fonseca.

Verdict

Matteo Berrettini remains a dangerous opponent despite his falling ranking. Raphael Collignon has found his form, has a 116-39 record on clay and can upset the odds in Madrid.
