Emma Navarro and Shuai Zhang both broke losing streaks to reach the Strasbourg quarterfinals. Zhang, age 37, entered the draw as a lucky loser and made her first tour-level clay quarterfinal in five years. Navarro, ranked No. 39, also ended a tough run by defeating world No. 17 Iva Jovic. Despite Zhang's 3-0 head-to-head lead, Navarro's current form this week looks more convincing and gives her the edge to potentially advance further.

Zhang Reaches Rare Clay Quarterfinal

Zhang Shuai defeated Diane Parry 6-2, 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals in Strasbourg. She dropped serve only once and converted four of her 12 break-point chances during the match.

The run marks an impressive turnaround for Zhang, who lost to Talia Gibson in the final qualifying round before entering the main draw as a lucky loser. She then survived a three-set battle against Cristina Bucsa in the opening round.

The 37-year-old arrived in Strasbourg after a difficult stretch of results. Before this week, she had recorded multiple wins in only one of her 14 tournaments this season, reaching the semifinals in Merida, while 10 events ended without a victory.

This is Zhang’s first tour-level clay quarterfinal in five years. She now owns a 2-2 record in tour-level clay quarterfinals, with one of those defeats coming in Strasbourg against Elena Rybakina in 2020.

Emma Navarro defeated world No. 17 Iva Jovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals this week. She dropped serve five times but converted seven of her 12 break-point opportunities during the match.

This is Navarro’s third quarterfinal appearance in Strasbourg in four visits. She previously reached this stage in 2023 and 2025 before losing to Anna Blinkova and Beatriz Haddad Maia respectively.

Like her opponent, Navarro also arrived this week struggling for form. Before Strasbourg, she had won only three matches across her previous nine tournaments, with her only multiple-win run this season coming in Adelaide where she reached the quarterfinals.

The American now looks to break through at this stage on clay, where she currently holds a 0-4 record in tour-level quarterfinals, including two defeats in Strasbourg.

Verdict

Both players have struggled significantly on tour since the start of the season. However, based on their performances this week, Emma Navarro looks in the better position to progress further.
