Victoria Mboko and Leylah Fernandez, two rising Canadian tennis stars, are set to compete in the Strasbourg clay-court quarterfinal. Mboko clinched her first clay quarterfinal after beating Lois Boisson and maintains a dominant record versus players outside the Top 20 this year. Fernandez, despite improved results on clay, still struggles at this tournament level and against top-ranked players. Key stats and past head-to-head suggest Mboko currently holds the edge heading into the match. Overall, Mboko's momentum and form make her the slight favorite.

Mboko Secures Maiden Clay Quarterfinal

Victoria Mboko defeated recent injury returnee Lois Boisson 6-4, 6-3 to secure her place in the quarterfinals. It is also the first clay-court quarterfinal of her career.

Mboko failed to save either of the two break points she faced, but she still controlled the match by converting five of her 10 break-point chances.

This was also her first win on clay this season. Illness issues forced her to skip the early clay swing, and her only previous clay event this year ended with a straight-sets loss to Caty McNally in Madrid.

The Canadian enjoyed a strong start to 2026 with four quarterfinal-or-better finishes and a fourth-round run at the Australian Open, results that helped her break into the top 10. She now owns a 4-3 record in tour-level quarterfinals, though she lost her previous two at this stage.

Fernandez Continues Clay Improvement

Leylah Fernandez followed her straight-sets win over Leolia Jeanjean with a three-set victory against Magdalena Frech to reach the quarterfinals in Strasbourg. She won the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Fernandez arrived in Strasbourg on a three-match losing streak but has responded strongly with two solid victories this week. It is now her best result at the tournament.

The Canadian struggled for momentum during the opening months of the season, failing to record multiple wins in eight tournaments. However, her level has improved during the clay swing with quarterfinal runs in Stuttgart, Madrid and now Strasbourg.

Clay has traditionally been her weakest surface, with her only previous clay quarterfinal before this season coming at French Open in 2022. Although she has now reached three clay quarterfinals this year, she lost the previous two.

Verdict

Leylah Fernandez’s recent improvement on clay has been encouraging, but her current level may still not be enough to seriously challenge Victoria Mboko at the moment.
