No matter how sharp Wawrinka has looked, the physical question mark is never far away at this stage of his career. The miles and the surgeries mean consistency is always the risk. 

Still, if he brings the same level he has shown in his first two matches this fortnight, he has more than enough to get this done in straight sets.

This United Cup has also felt very different from his last appearance in 2023. Switzerland went out in the group stage back then, but this time they have reached their first ever quarterfinal, helped by strong team results across the board. 

It is also a rare knockout setting for Wawrinka. His last time at this stage in a team competition was the 2014 Davis Cup, when he and Federer led Switzerland to the title.

The new season has clearly hit the reset button for Sebastian Baez. He ended 2025 badly out of form, but 2026 has started in the opposite direction. 

Wins over Jaume Munar and a shock victory against Taylor Fritz have put him straight back in the conversation. 

Those results have also powered Argentina into the United Cup quarterfinals. Baez has been the engine of this run, delivering the singles wins an underdog team needed to survive and advance. 

It already stands as his best showing in a team event. That is a big contrast to his Davis Cup record, where results have been mixed and he owns a 3–5 singles mark.
