Ugo Humbert narrowly advanced to the Eastbourne second round after a tough win over Mattia Bellucci, but his inconsistency leaves him vulnerable against Jenson Brooksby. With Brooksby holding a 2-1 head-to-head lead and strong motivation to defend his points from last year, the American is viewed as a live underdog. Recent form and conditions suggest Brooksby offers clear betting value, especially for a win in straight sets, despite his struggles against top 50 players this season.

Ugo Humbert has been far from convincing for most of this season and did little to change that perception in his opening match at Eastbourne, where he had to scramble past Mattia Bellucci. With that kind of level, he could find himself in trouble against an opponent as dangerous and unpredictable as Jenson Brooksby.

Brooksby should also be highly motivated this week as he looks to defend the runner-up points he earned at last year's edition of the tournament. Given his comfort on grass and the confidence that comes from previous success at this venue, he appears capable of taking advantage of Humbert's current vulnerabilities.

Brooksby Faces Uphill Battle

  • Humbert is looking to reach consecutive grass-court quarterfinals this year.
  • He owns a 12–5 record against players outside the Top 50 in 2026.
  • Jenson Brooksby has failed to win multiple matches in 14 of his last 15 events.
  • He has lost 11 of his last 14 matches against Top 50 players.

Ugo Humbert Survives Bellucci Test in Eastbourne

Ugo Humbert reached the second round in Eastbourne after edging Mattia Bellucci in a tight three-set contest, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. The Frenchman was broken only once during the match and converted both break points he created.

Humbert was unable to defend his semifinal points in 's-Hertogenbosch earlier this month, but he followed that with a semifinal run at Queen's Club. He now returns to Eastbourne with another semifinal result to defend after reaching the last four here last year, where his run ended against Jenson Brooksby.

The Frenchman has started to put together stronger results at an important stage of the season. Between Doha and 's-Hertogenbosch, he recorded multiple main-draw wins at only one tournament across 10 events.

Earlier in the year, Humbert reached the final in Adelaide, the semifinals in Rotterdam, and the fourth round in Miami. Those results have helped keep him among the leading players in the rankings despite a mixed middle part of the season.

Brooksby Starts Strong in Eastbourne

Jenson Brooksby cleared the opening round in Eastbourne with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Alexander Vukic. The American trailed by a break twice in the opening set but recovered on both occasions before taking control of the match.

Brooksby has struggled for results throughout the season. He has played 15 tournaments and recorded multiple main-draw wins only once, reaching the quarterfinals in Dubai back in February.

The American was unable to defend his title in Houston earlier this year, a result that pushed him outside the top 50 rankings. He now faces another important week, as he is defending runner-up points from Eastbourne and risks another rankings drop if he cannot match that result.

Brooksby has registered multiple main-draw wins on grass only three times in his career. Those runs came with a runner-up finish in Newport in 2021, a third-round appearance at Wimbledon in 2022, and another runner-up finish in Eastbourne last year.
