Pliskova Looks to Continue Her Revival

Karolina Pliskova started her Wimbledon campaign with a straight-set victory over compatriot Tereza Valentova, winning 6-4, 6-4. She won 84 percent of her first-serve points and did not lose her serve during the match.

With the victory, she snapped her three-match losing streak at Wimbledon and registered her first win at the tournament since 2022.

The Czech has shown an impressive resurgence since returning from injury earlier this season. She has won at least two matches in seven of the nine tournaments she has played this year, including four quarterfinal-or-better finishes, which have helped her return to the top 100 in the rankings.

Pliskova has a disappointing record in second-round matches at Wimbledon. She has progressed beyond this stage only three times in nine appearances, with her most recent second-round win coming in 2021 when she went on to reach the final.

Iga Swiatek Continues Title Defence

Iga Swiatek began her Wimbledon title-defense campaign with a three-set victory over Taylor Townsend in the first round, winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Despite the win, her serving performance was below her usual standards as she lost her serve three times and committed nine double faults during the match.

The Pole has looked more vulnerable in recent months and has failed to win multiple matches in four of her last six tournaments, highlighting her struggles for form and confidence.

Overall, she has played 10 tournaments this season and reached at least the quarterfinals in five of them, including the semifinals in Rome and the quarterfinals at Indian Wells, Doha, and the Australian Open.

Swiatek holds a perfect 5-0 record in second-round matches at Wimbledon and will be looking to extend that record this week.

Verdict

Karolina Pliskova has enjoyed an impressive resurgence over the past six months and has rediscovered much of her best tennis. However, her disappointing record at this stage of Wimbledon remains a concern. With Iga Swiatek's superior consistency and strong record in this matchup, the Pole is favored to extend her lead in the head-to-head.
