  • Collingwood to control another tight rivalry clash, with 1-39 and the total under the best plays.
  • The Magpies’ defence is the key edge, conceding just 75 points per game compared to Carlton’s 100+.
  • Nick Daicos shapes as the standout player prop, averaging 35 disposals this season.
  • Carlton’s issue remains momentum swings, while Collingwood’s pressure and field position game should punish them.

Carlton Blues vs Collingwood Magpies Preview

Collingwood will pour more pain on Carlton, in what shapes as a low scoring scrap to kick off Round 6.

There is plenty at stake as these old rivals meet with both clubs under pressure. Carlton come in at 1-4 after another frustrating defeat, this time by 28 points to Adelaide in Gather Round, where they again lost control when momentum swung against them.

Collingwood are 2-3 and have now dropped their past two, but the six-point loss to Fremantle was far more encouraging, with the Magpies controlling territory for long periods before failing to capitalise late.

Expect this to be played on Collingwood’s terms for large stretches. The Magpies should look to lock the ball in their front half, force repeat defensive transitions, and trust the defensive structure that has held opponents to just 75 points per game this season.

The Blues did show better signs with their finish against Adelaide, but their inability to absorb momentum swings remains the defining issue of their season. Against a Collingwood side that still defends strongly behind the ball, those lapses are likely to be punished.

The Magpies’ defence gives them the edge in the Round 6 clash. They are conceding just 75 points per game, significantly stronger than Carlton, who are leaking over 100. That gap becomes critical in what shapes as a low-total match, especially given both sides are averaging around the 70-point mark offensively.

Carlton should have their patches through the midfield, particularly through Sam Walsh and Patrick Cripps, but Collingwood’s ability to control field position, defend repeat entries, and stay composed in late-game situations makes them the stronger play. With 17 of the past 18 meetings landing in the 1-39 margin, another tight rivalry clash looks likely, with the under also firmly in play.

  • Collingwood have won their past 12 matches against non-finalists from 2025
  • The Magpies are conceding just 75 points per game this season
  • 17 of the past 18 matches between the two sides have fallen in the 1-39 point margin, with Collingwood winning 15 of those
  • Nick Daicos is averaging 35 disposals this season

Head to Head

Collingwood have won four on the trot against Carlton and were 56-point winners the last time the two sides met, with that coming in Round 17 last season. Nick Daicos had 36 disposals in that match, while Dan McStay and Jamie Elliott booted four goals apiece.

That match ended a run of 17 straight that had been decided by under the 39.5-point margin. Four of the past eight have been decided by one goal or under.

Sam Walsh has had 30+ disposals in his past three matches against Collingwood, while Nic Newman has hit that mark in his past two.

Carlton Blues Form Analysis

Carlton sit with a 1-4 win-loss record and have been unable to handle momentum swings in matches, giving up leads in their first four, before a six-goal burst from Adelaide made it difficult in the 28-point Gather Round defeat.

The Blues led the inside 50 count in the match against the Crows but were inefficient when heading in. Mitch McGovern and Ben Ainsworth were the only multiple goalkickers. The Blues are struggling to find a focal point up forward, with McGovern leading the goalkicking tally with eight goals from five matches, while Harry McKay has seven.

As a team, Carlton are averaging just 79 points per game this season.

Sam Walsh and Patrick Cripps both had 29 disposals in the match against the Crows. Walsh is averaging 28 this season and has hit the 30+ in three of five in 2026.

Carlton Blues Team News

Carlton dropped their 2025 best and fairest winner George Hewett from the side that tackled Adelaide, and it will be interesting to see if the former Swan earns a recall.

Will Hayward has served his one-match suspension, while Jacob Weitering, Harry Dean, and Cooper Lord have been out with concussion and may also return to bolster the Blues line-up.

Collingwood Magpies Form Analysis

Collingwood come in with a 2-3 win-loss record and have lost their past two.

They were without Nick Daicos when smashed by Adelaide a fortnight ago, going down in the clearances 24-42 and inside 50s 45-64, giving up 34 scoring shots to 15 in the 119-65 scoreline.

Last weekend, they lost to Fremantle by six points in a low-scoring scrap, kicking 5.9 to 7.3. The Pies led the inside 50 count 61-45 and had more scoring shots to lead for most of the night but conceded the last two goals.

After sitting at 15-2 at the end of Round 17 last season, the Magpies have lost eight of their past 12 home-and-away matches but are 4-0 against sides that did not play finals in 2025.

Nick Daicos had 31 disposals in the loss to Fremantle and is averaging 35 disposals this season. His brother Josh has had 25+ in four of his five matches, picking up 23 last weekend.

Dan McStay (eight goals) and Tim Membrey (seven) lead the Pies in front of the big sticks.

Collingwood Magpies Team News

Collingwood will lose Jordan De Goey after the 2023 premiership player was sidelined with concussion against Fremantle.

Jack Buller and Charlie West are among those that could come in, while Darcy Moore remains on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
