2026 Carlton Blues vs West Coast Eagles Preview
Carlton will keep the dream alive in what shapes as a danger game when they take on the West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.
The Blues have come from nowhere since sacking Michael Voss last month and have won five in a row and sit just one win outside of the top 10.
They head in as favourites against West Coast but the Eagles can push the Blues in a match where the total points under looks to be firmly in play, while West Coast shape as the value with the 31.5-point line that has been set.
Carlton's turnaround has been built around pressure, contest work and a far stronger defensive structure, with the Blues rediscovering the ability to control momentum and close out matches. Those traits should hold them in good stead against a West Coast side that has improved significantly but is still finding ways to turn competitive performances into wins.
The total points markets stand out strongly. Carlton's recent matches have been built around territory, pressure and defence rather than shootouts, while West Coast have also tightened up considerably in recent weeks.
The Eagles average of just 74 points conceded in their past five matches must be respected, while Carlton were able to hold GWS to just 65 points without Jacob Weitering last weekend. With both sides averaging low-scoring totals over their past five matches, another contest that struggles to break open looks likely.
Harley Reid shapes as a key player for the visitors. The young star has enjoyed an outstanding season and continues to set the tone around stoppages with his power, physicality and ability to surge the ball forward. Reid had 28 disposals in his last match against Carlton and looks capable of having another major influence through the midfield, particularly if he recaptures his first-quarter performance against North Melbourne when he had 11 disposals and five clearances.
Ultimately, Carlton's midfield depth should prove decisive. Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh, George Hewett and Jagga Smith have driven the Blues' resurgence and their ability to win territory through stoppage and centre clearance should generate enough opportunities to secure a sixth consecutive victory but don’t expect this one to be a blowout
- The total points average in Carlton’s five matches under Josh Fraser is just 150
- West Coast’s total points average in their past five matches is just 154
- Harley Reid had 28 disposals in his last match against Carlton
- The Eagles have won two of their past five with their three losses decided by 10 points or less
Head to Head
Carlton have won the past six matches between the two sides, with those coming at an average margin of 68.5 points. The most recent match went the way of the Blues by 34 points at Perth Stadium in Round 14 last season.
Standout player performances in the recent head to heads have come from;
- George Hewett (Blues) - 30+ disposals in his past five against the Eagles at an average of 34
- Adam Cerra (Blues) - 27+ disposals in each of his past four
- Harley Reid (Eagles) - 28 disposals in his most recent match against Carlton
- Will Hayward (Blues) - As a Swan, he booted two goals in each of his past four against the Eagles
It has been a stunning turnaround by Carlton since the club parted ways with Michael Voss. The Blues have won five straight matches under caretaker coach Josh Fraser, with those victories coming against the Western Bulldogs, Port Adelaide, Geelong, Essendon and GWS.
They have rediscovered their pressure, contest work and ability to sustain intensity across four quarters. After struggling badly with momentum swings and second-half fadeouts earlier in the season, Carlton are far more connected, with their reset built around pressure, territory and transition.
Carlton's leaders have driven the turnaround, led by Patrick Cripps, who has returned to dominant form through the midfield. The two-time Brownlow Medallist has had 30+ disposals in four of his past six matches and 29 in another. Sam Walsh and Jagga Smith have both had 25+ disposals in five of their past six, with 24 in another.
The Blues have found multiple avenues towards goal and Francis Evans chimed in with three goals against the Giants, while Will Hayward and Matt Cottrell were other multiple goalkickers. Hayward and Brodie Kemp have kicked two goals in three of their past four matches.
Carlton Blues Team News
There were no injuries for the Blues to come out of the win against GWS. Jacob Weitering is a chance to return from injury, while Ollie Hollands will be considered on the back of some strong VFL form.
West Coast have a win-loss record of 4-10 and come off the bye in Round 15. They won two of their last five matches prior to the break, while their three losses were by 10 points or less, including the Round 14 match against North Melbourne, which saw them go down by a point.
That loss came despite leading the inside 50 count 50-44 and having a chance to steal the match late in the piece, but Jake Waterman’s shot hit the post with a minute left on the clock. Waterman has kicked three goals in each of his past three matches but is shooting at just 41% accuracy this season.
The Eagles' improvement has come on the back of better ball use and tighter defence that has seen them concede an average of just 74 points per game in their past five matches.
Tim Kelly is back in solid touch and had 27 disposals against North Melbourne to make it three straight with 25+, while Tom McCarthy has had 30+ in two of his past three. He missed the Kangaroos match with a hamstring injury.
