  • Geelong to bank a crucial home win, with the Bulldogs’ ruck issues again likely to be exposed.
  • Bailey Smith is the standout prop, carrying a four-game streak of 30+ disposals.
  • Shannon Neale’s matchup record is elite, with nine goals in his past three against the Dogs.
  • The key edge is Geelong’s clearance and territory dominance, especially with Dangerfield likely back.

Geelong Cats vs Western Bulldogs Preview

Geelong will pick up an important win when they host the Western Bulldogs at the Cattery on Fiday night.

The Cats come in with a 3-2 win-loss record and trail the 4-1 Bulldogs on the ladder but with their clearance dominance, running power and ability to control territory at their home deck, they should prove too good for a Bulldogs side dealing with some key structural issues.

The Bulldogs battled in the absence of their ruckman, Tim English, last weekend when they were badly exposed at the stoppages by Hawthorn in the 40-point Gather Round loss.

Unless Luke Beveridge can find the right formula for the Round 6 outing, they will be exposed again by a Geelong on-ball group that is in excellent form and should be further boosted by the likely return of Patrick Dangerfield.

The Cats come off a 46-poitn win over West Coast in Gather Round, dominating the inside 50 count, while Bailey Smith and Max Holmes both had big games in the midfield.

With Geelong’s polished forward line, including Shannon Neale, who has a strong recent record in this matchup, as well as Jeremy Cameron finding some form, the Cats look the play here with Smith to be heavily involved against his former side every chance to continue his 30+ disposal streak.

  • Geelong were 14-point winners the last time the two sides met.
  • Bailey Smith has had 30+ disposals in his past four matches and had 33 in his only match against his former side.
  • Shannon Neale has kicked nine goals in his past three matches against the Bulldogs.
  • Injury concerns for the Bulldogs with English leaving a massive hole in the ruck.

Head to Head

Geelong were 14-point winners in Round 11 last season at GMHBA Stadium, despite having fewer scoring shots in the 20.7 to 16.17 scoreline. Jeremy Cameron (six goals) and Shannon Neale (five) did the damage in front of the big sticks, while Bailey Smith had 33 disposals against his former side. The Bulldogs were 47-point winners at the venue against an injury-depleted Cats outfit in Round 19 of 2024.

Neale has kicked nine from his past three against the Bulldogs, while Aaron Naughton has kicked 12 in his past three against Geelong. Adam Treloar has had 30+ disposals in his past four against Geelong, while Tom Liberatore has had 30+ in seven of his past eight.

Geelong Cats Form Analysis

Geelong come in with a 3-2 win-loss record but have done well given their tough draw, playing four of last year’s finalists to start the season, breaking even at 2-2, before proving to be too good for West Coast last weekend, taking out the Gather Round clash by 46 points.

That margin could have been more were it not for some inaccuracy in front of goal in the 17.20 to 11.10 scoreline. Jeremy Cameron booted three goals in his best return since 2025, while Mark O’Connor was swung forward and also snagged three.

Bailey Smith and Max Holmes both had 34 disposals. Smith has had 30+ disposals in his past four matches, while Holmes has gone 25+ in every game so far in 2026. Tanner Bruhn has had 25+ in his past two matches, providing run off half-back.

Geelong’s key strength lies in a highly structured, system-driven game built around contest dominance and controlled ball movement. They won the contested possessions (144-119) and clearances (42-34) against the Eagles, leading to a whopping 67 inside 50s to 42.

Geelong Cats Team News

Patrick Dangerfield should be good to finally make his return from a calf injury. Shaun Mannagh has been quiet in recent weeks and might be the one to make way.

Western Bulldogs Form Analysis

The Western Bulldogs suffered their first defeat last weekend, going down to Hawthorn by 40 points. Without their regular ruckman, Tim English, they were smashed at the stoppages, going down 64-17 in hitouts and 34-16 in stoppage clearances, but they nearly broke even in inside 50s.

While they were 4-0 heading in, there were some warning signs after quarter time from the Essendon match when they were outscored by the Bombers. Sloppy turnovers and poor handling under pressure seemed to be a theme that carried into the Hawks match.

A positive from the Hawthorn game was the form of James O’Donnell in the back half, while Sam Darcy was a strong focal point up forward with two goals, but he missed a couple he probably should have kicked and the Bulldogs’ inaccuracy (8.16) hurt them.

Marcus Bontempelli had a team-high 26 disposals and has had 30+ in three of his past four. The key takeaway remains how they adapt without English in the ruck. Louis Emmett and Jordan Croft battled before Rory Lobb provided some spark when switched there in the third term against the Hawks.

Western Bulldogs Team News

More injury concerns for the Bulldogs with Ed Richards rolling his ankle late in the loss to Hawthorn. He headed into that match in doubt with a knee injury but may be good to go come Friday. Adam Treloar missed his latest VFL match due to soreness, while Tom Liberatore might not quite make it back from a hamstring. Those two would be among suitable replacements should Richards not get up in time. Latham Vandermeer is expected to be available after missing recent weeks with concussion.
