Ecuador vs Argentina Live Stream & Tips - Goals in Short Supply in Guayaquil

Ecuador and Argentina enter their World Cup qualifier in Guayaquil already assured of qualification, setting the stage for a potentially low-key, defense-oriented contest. Both teams have impressive defensive records, and recent encounters between them have been low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals in most matches. Ecuador have drawn six of their last nine games, often going goalless, while Argentina are set to rest Lionel Messi and make squad changes. The outlook favors a draw and few goals as both sides look to close out qualifying campaigns.

Ecuador vs Argentina Predictions

With both nations already assured of their place in next summer's World Cup finals, a low-key contest could be on the cards in Guayaquil. Under 2.5 goals is my best bet, while I wouldn't be shocked to see this game finish goalless.

Stats

  • Ecuador have seen under 2.5 goals in 11 of their last 13 matches
  • Ecuador have drawn 6 of their last 9 matches
  • Ecuador have seen under 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 6 matches against Argentina
  • Argentina have drawn 2 of their last 4 matches against Ecuador
  • Argentina have seen under 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 6 matches

Head to Head

Ecuador and Argentina have met on 18 occasions since 2004. Argentina won nine of those games, while Ecuador secured three victories. Only six goals were scored in their last four encounters.

Ecuador Form

Ecuador return to Guayaquil after extending their unbeaten run to ten matches with a hard-fought goalless draw in Paraguay last week. In a match of few clear-cut opportunities, Sebastian Beccacece's side emerged unscathed in Asuncion.

Remarkably, La Tri have been held to 0-0 stalemates in six of their last nine World Cup qualifiers, including each of their last four fixtures.

A magnificent defensive record has been the bedrock of Ecuadorian success in the past year. Beccacece's men conceded just five goals in 17 games played in their successful World Cup qualification campaign.

Ecuador Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Hernan Galindez, Moises Ramirez, Gonzalo Valle, David Cabezas
Defenders: Pervis Estupinan, Angelo Preciado, Piero Hincapie, Felix Torres, Willian Pacho, Cristian Ramirez, Xavier Arreaga, Joel Ordonez
Midfielders: Moises Caicedo, Alan Franco, Gonzalo Plata, Kendry Paez, Alan Minda, John Yeboah, Pedro Vite, Jordy Alcivar, Yaimar Medina, Denil Castillo, Darwin Guagua, Patrik Mercado, Bryan Ramirez
Forwards: Enner Valencia, Kevin Rodriguez, Leonardo Campana, Nilson Angulo, John Mercado

Sebastian Beccacece is unlikely to make changes from the side that picked up a point in Paraguay. Gonzalo Plata and Kevin Rodriguez are possible contenders to earn recalls should the hosts opt to freshen up their selection this week.

Argentina Form

Argentina come into Wednesday's World Cup qualifier unbeaten in six matches after a comfortable 3-0 win against Venezuela last weekend. On an emotional evening in Buenos Aires, Lionel Messi scored twice in his final home appearance for the national team.

Lionel Scaloni's World Cup winners have enjoyed a dominant qualification campaign, winning 12 and losing only three of 17 qualifiers. La Albiceleste remain ten points clear at the summit of the group ahead of Wednesday's final round of qualifying fixtures.

A wonderful run of form in recent years has seen the Argentines lose only four of 78 international fixtures played since 2019.

Argentina Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Emiliano Martinez, Geronimo Rulli, Walter Benitez
Defenders: Nicolas Otamendi, Nicolas Tagliafico, Marcos Acuna, Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero, Gonzalo Montiel, Juan Foyth, Leonardo Balerdi, Facundo Medina, Julio Soler
Midfielders: Rodrigo De Paul, Leandro Paredes, Giovani Lo Celso, Alexis Mac Allister, Exequiel Palacios, Thiago Almada, Nicolas Paz, Franco Mastantuono, Claudio Echeverri, Alan Varela
Forwards: Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez, Nicolas Gonzalez, Angel Correa, Giuliano Simeone, Valentin Carboni, Jose Manuel Lopez

Head coach Scaloni will be forced into at least two changes to his selection. Lionel Messi has been permitted to skip the fixture after his emotional send-off at Estadio Mas Monumental. Lautaro Martinez is tipped to earn a recall to the first XI.

Cristian Romero also misses out due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

Verdict

A low-scoring outcome seems inevitable in what is likely to prove a tight contest in Guayaquil. Under 2.5 goals is a solid choice, while I also fancy a share of the points at Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha.
