It is a must-win game for New Zealand and Belgium when they square off at BC Place in their final Group G clash at the FIFA World Cup.

Both teams are seeking their first win in the competition and could be set for an open contest here.

With the All Whites showing attacking quality in the tournament, they are likely to get on the score sheet in this one.

Key Stats

  • New Zealand have scored in their two Group G matches.
  • New Zealand have scored in three of their last five matches in all competitions.
  • Belgium have conceded in five of their last nine matches in all competitions.

No Previous Meetings

There have been no previous meetings between New Zealand and Belgium at this level.

New Zealand Still in the Mix

New Zealand suffered a 3-1 defeat to Egypt in their previous Group G fixture. They led at the break through Finn Surman’s early opener, but failed to add to that effort and suffered a defensive capitulation in the second half.

Despite that defeat, New Zealand are not down and out yet as they have one point after playing out a 2-2 draw with Iran in their opening fixture. The All Whites are still in the mix to qualify for the round of 16, but need a win here to stand a chance.

While New Zealand are winless in the competition, one of the positives for them is that they have shown some attacking quality in their two matches. Darren Bazeley’s men have scored in both fixtures in Group G, with the combination of Elijah Just and Chris Wood proving a handful for defenders.

Belgium Desperate to find Spark

Belgium come into this clash off the back of a 0-0 draw with Iran in their previous fixture. They saw plenty of possession and created a few scoring opportunities, but struggled to get past the defensive organisation of the Iranians.

The Red Devils also battled to a 1-1 draw with Egypt in their opening fixture, and both results mean they are still trying to find their spark in Group G. Rudi Garcia’s team need a win in their final fixture to be guaranteed a spot in the round of 32.

Belgium may have kept a clean sheet in their last game, but they faced little attacking threat from the Iranians. Their defence has been known to cave to pressure and have failed to keep a clean sheet in five of their last nine matches in all competitions.

Team News and Predicted Line-ups

New Zealand (4-2-3-1): Max Crocombe; Tim Payne, Finn Surman, Michael Boxall, Liberato Cacace; Joe Bell, Marko Stamenic, Callum McCowatt, Sarpreet Singh, Elijah Just; Chris Wood.

New Zealand have no injuries or suspensions and are unlikely to make changes to the team. Wood and Just should continue in attack, while Surman is expected to feature at the back once again.

Belgium (4-2-3-1): Thibaut Courtois; Thomas Meunier, Arthur Theate, Brandon Mechele, Maxim de Cuyper, Amadou Onana, Youri Tielemans; Alexis Saelemaekers, Kevin de Bruyne, Leandro Trossard; Romelu Lukaku.

Nathan Ngoy is suspended for Belgium after receiving a red card last time out and is likely to be replaced by Arthur Theate. Jeremy Doku is back with the squad after attending the birth of his child in London, but may have to make do with a substitute role.

Verdict

Desperate for a win, Belgium are likely to come all out in this one, and that may leave spaces at the back that could be exploited.

New Zealand have already shown some attacking quality in their two previous fixtures and can be backed to score at least one goal for the third straight game.
