Japan vs Iceland Live Stream & Tips - Japan to Claim Comfortable Kirin Cup Win
Japan will host Iceland in Tokyo for their second-ever head-to-head, having previously beaten them 3-1, 14 years ago. Japan are on a strong run, winning their last four matches and keeping clean sheets in all of them. In contrast, Iceland have managed just one win in eight games and have failed to qualify for the World Cup. With defensive solidity and strong home form, Japan are heavily favored to win without conceding. Key absentees (such as Mitoma) are noted, but Japan’s squad depth remains a strength.

Japan vs Iceland Predictions
Japan have impressed this year, and they should keep the door closed in a routine home win this weekend.
I have my stake on Japan to win with a clean sheet at MUFG Stadium.
Home Win to Nil Expected
- Japan won their last 4 matches
- Japan kept a clean sheet in their last 4 matches
- Iceland lost 8 of their last 14 matches
- Iceland failed to score in 3 of their last 5 defeats
Japan and Iceland Set For Third Encounter
Japan and Iceland will meet for the third time on Sunday. Japan claimed a 3-1 friendly victory in their most recent encounter 14 years ago.
Japan Maintain Fine Form
Japan return to Tokyo after impressing British audiences with superb away victories against Scotland and England in March. Following a 1-0 win at Hampden, the Blue Samurai upset the odds once again with another 1-0 success at Wembley.
In an impressive display of counter-attacking football, the Japanese conceded no clear-cut opportunities at Wembley despite facing 19 attempts from the home side.
Hajime Moriyasu's side have now won each of their last five matches (all friendlies) while they have lost just one of eight non-competitive encounters since last August.
Over a longer period, Japan have lost just two of 25 matches played since March 2024. Potential dark horses at this summer's FIFA World Cup, Moriyasu's men are up to 18th in the FIFA World rankings.
Defensive strength has been evident in recent performances. Japan kept a clean sheet in each of their last four matches and in seven of their last ten international fixtures.
Iceland Short in Winning Form
Iceland make the long trip to Tokyo after picking up a pair of friendly draws against Canada (2-2) and Haiti (1-1) in the March international break.
Orri Oskarsson put the Icelandics into a two-goal lead against Canada before a pair of Jonathan David penalties rescued the home side.
Three days later, also at BMO Field in Toronto, Gylfi Sigurdsson's second-half goal ensured a share of the spoils against the Haitians.
The Icelandics missed out on World Cup qualification after a third-place finish in UEFA Qualifying Group D. Despite some spirited displays, including a 2-2 draw against France, Iceland eventually finished three points behind Ukraine in the race for playoff places.
The Europeans, ranked 75th in the world, have struggled to find consistent form in recent months, with Iceland securing just one victory from eight international fixtures since August last year.
Squads and Team News
Japan Squad
Goalkeepers: Zion Suzuki, Keisuke Osako, Tomoki Hayakawa.
Defenders: Yukinari Sugawara, Shogo Taniguchi, Ko Itakura, Yuto Nagatomo, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Tsuyoshi Watanabe, Ayumu Seko, Hiroki Ito, Maya Yoshida, Junnosuke Suzuki.
Midfielders: Wataru Endo, Ao Tanaka, Takefusa Kubo, Ritsu Doan, Keito Nakamura, Junya Ito, Kaishu Sano, Daichi Kamada.
Forwards: Keisuke Goto, Daizen Maeda, Yuito Suzuki, Ayase Ueda, Koki Ogawa, Kento Shiogai.
Head coach Moriyasu has a 27-man squad available for this weekend's Kirin Challenge Cup contest. Brighton forward Karou Mitoma is a notable absentee after he was ruled out of the World Cup with a hamstring injury.
Ajax's Takehiro Tomiyasu has been recalled to the selection.
Mitoma's injury deprives Moriyasu of one of his most important players, but the Head Coach believes his side are more than capable despite the absence of the Brighton forward.
"Last year we played Brazil in a friendly, and we beat them for the first time, and Mitoma wasn't available to play in that game,"
"That reflects the team concept, that anyone can come into the line-up and the team still performs." Moriyasu said.
Iceland Squad
Goalkeepers: Hakon Valdimarsson, Ogmundur Kristinsson, Elias Rafn Olafsson, Anton Ari Einarsson.
Defenders: Sverrir Ingi Ingason, Victor Palsson, Hordur Bjorgvin Magnusson, Daniel Leo Gretarsson, Hjortur Hermannsson, Alfons Sampsted, Logi Tomasson, Dagur Dan Thorhallsson.
Midfielders: Aron Gunnarsson, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Isak Bergmann Johannesson, Stefan Teitur Thordarson, Hakon Haraldsson, Mikael Egill Ellertsson, Willum Thor Willumsson, Andri Baldursson, Kristian Hlynsson, Kristall Mani Ingason, Gisli Thordarson.
Forwards: Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson, Albert Gudmundsson, Arnor Sigurdsson, Orri Oskarsson, Stefan Ingi Sigurdarson, Brynjolfur Willumsson, Daniel Gudjohnsen, Benony Breki Andresson, Viktor Dadason.
Arnar Gunnlaugsson named a large 32-man pool for Iceland's upcoming fixtures against Japan and Argentina. Veteran midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has been included and could win his 86th cap.
Blackburn forward Andri Gudjohnsen has not been included in the squad.
Verdict
Japan are in great form, and they should prove far too strong for Iceland this weekend. I have my stake on a home win to nil in Tokyo.
