Ecuador, having lost only 2 out of 18 qualifying games and rebounding strongly after an opening defeat to Ivory Coast, will face in-form Mexico, whose unbeaten streak stretches back to November. Both teams have shown impressive consistency, making this a highly anticipated clash. The expectation is that neither side will yield easily at Estadio Banorte, likely leading to extra time to decide the winner.

Ecuador played better than the group phase results might suggest and I don’t view them as underdogs here. Mexico have been strong defensively, yet to concede a goal, so a draw in regular time looks likely.

Key Stats

  • Mexico are unbeaten in their last 11 matches.
  • Mexico have kept a clean sheet in 5 of their last 6 matches.
  • Mexico have drawn their last 3 matches against Ecuador.
  • Ecuador have drawn 10 of their last 16 matches.
  • Ecuador have seen under 1.5 goals in 2 of their last 3 matches.

Mexico Dominate H2H

This is going to be 26th head to head match between these sides, Mexico having a 14-4 advantage in terms of victories, 7 games ending without a winner.

El Tri Yet to Concede a Goal

Mexico’s results have been impeccable so far at the World Cup 2026, claiming three victories in the group stages without conceding a single goal.

Their performance in the opener against South Africa was not that impressive, but enough to take a 2-0 victory against defensively oriented side. Julian Quinones broke the deadlock here nine minutes in, while veteran Raul Jimenez sealed the result in the second half.

The Mexicans allowed more space and two goal opportunities to South Korea in the second round, but were lucky to take a 1-0 victory here. Luis Romo was the sole scorer in the 50th half after the opponent’s goalkeeper made a big mistake.

They wrapped things up with a convincing 3-0 victory against the Czech Republic, netting all three goals in the second half and allowing just one shot on target.

Ecuador Deserved More Than Four Points in Group Phase

Ecuador had a rough start to the tournament, suffering a 1-0 defeat against Ivory Coast in the opening round (conceded in stoppage time), having 1.02-1.52 xG and 12-15 shots in this entertaining contest.

2.84 expected goals, 75% possession and 15 shots on target were not enough to find the net against underdog Curacao in the second round as this clash ended in a shocking goalless draw. Veteran Enner Valencia missed four goal chances.

The South American side needed three points in the final round against big guns Germany to advance and claimed heroic 2-1 victory, recovering from an early deficit. First, Nilson Angulo found an equalizer in the first half, while Gonzalo Plata netted a winner in the 77th minute.

Team News & Predicted Lineups

Mexico (4-3-3) Raul Rangel; Jorge Sanchez, Cesar Montes, Johan Vasquez, Jesus Gallardo; Erik Lira, Luis Romo, Erick Gutierrez; Roberto Alvarado, Raul Jimenez, Julian Quinones

Veteran Raul Jimenez was fully rested against the Czech Republic and I expect him to lead the attack here. Julian Quinones is the leading scorer with two goals. Mexico have no injury concerns ahead of this match.

Ecuador (4-4-2) Hernan Galindez; Alan Franco, Joel Ordonez, Willian Pacho, Piero Hincapie; John Yeboah, Moises Caicedo, Pedro Vite, Nilson Angulo; Gonzalo Plata, Enner Valencia

Even though his performances haven't been great so far, Enner Valencia is expected to spearhead Ecuador's attack, searching for his milestone 50th goal for the national team. Ecuador also have no injury problems ahead of the knockout stage.

Verdict

Ecuador have lost just two out of 18 qualifying games and recovered from an opening loss to Ivory Coast in a great fashion. Mexico are unbeaten since November, so I think we will need extra-time at Estadio Banorte.
