Switzerland enters the World Cup 2026 qualifier against Qatar as strong favorites thanks to an unbeaten qualifying campaign and only two goals conceded. In contrast, Qatar has struggled, losing half of their Asian qualifiers and remaining winless in recent friendlies. Key predictions include a Swiss win to nil, with Switzerland's striker Breel Embolo tipped to score, given his recent form. The evidence suggests a comfortable Swiss victory and Embolo impacting the scoresheet.

Qatar had a lot of problems in the Asian WC 2026 qualifiers, conceding 24 goals in 10 games before the final phase. Switzerland didn’t lose a single qualifying game while conceding just two goals, so I will back them to win to nil here.

Qatar Winless Since October 


Julen Lopetegui has successfully led Qatar to their second World Cup appearance, securing a place at the upcoming tournament through the regular Asian qualifiers.    

Their first appearance in 2026 was a friendly clash against Republic of Ireland in late May, suffering a 1-0 defeat in Dublin even though the opposition had one player sent off just before the break. 

Qatar failed to end their five-game winless run a couple of days ago in another friendly against underdog El Salvador in Los Angeles, the game ending in a goalless draw. They had 1.00-1.14 xG here, Alaaeldin Ahmed missing two huge chances to score. 

Switzerland Had Great Qualifying Campaign 


Switzerland had a great run in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers, winning 1st place in Group B with 14 points ahead of Kosovo, Slovenia and Sweden, not losing a single match with a 14-2 goal difference.   

They started 2026 with a thriller 4-3 home defeat against Germany in late March, while a couple of days later, they held red-hot Norway to a goalless draw in Oslo, finishing this match with higher xG and more shots. 

Murat Yakin’s side had two test games ahead of the World Cup 2026, easily beating Jordan 4-1 in front of the home crowd in St Gallen. A couple of days ago, they had drawn against Australia 1-1 but had plenty of rotations.

Homam Ahmed is the only player on Qatar's entire WC roster playing outside of Qatari top flight (playing for Cultural Leonesa in Spain). 

Hassan Al-Haydos is the captain with 186 appearances for the national team, while Almoez Ali is the top scorer with 55 goals.

Verdict

Qatar are one of the weakest WC 2026 participants in my opinion as they lost half of Asian qualifying games. Switzerland are backed to win without conceding here.
 
I am also backing striker Breel Embolo to find the net. He netted three times in his last five games for Switzerland, while also netting 10 goals for Rennes this season.
