Western Sydney Wanderers host Melbourne Victory in the last 16 of the Australia Cup. Despite Wanderers finishing at the bottom of the last A-League season, their preparation and recent performances—including a Cup win and strong friendly showing—make them strong contenders. Meanwhile, Melbourne Victory, two-time Cup winners, started well under new manager Savarese but face a challenging away game. The recommendation leans towards the Wanderers for value, with an expectation of under 2.5 goals in a typically tight fixture.

Western Sydney Wanderers vs Melbourne Victory Verdict

Two A-League rivals go head to head in the last 16 of the Australia Cup and the value is on the hosts. Western Sydney Wanderers have had more prep ahead of the new season and can edge a tight game.
  • Under 2.5 goals has landed in the last two meetings
  • Wanderers have won five of their last eight home games vs Victory

Wanderers vs Victory Head To Head

These two teams have split their last four meetings at two wins apiece.

Western Sydney Wanderers Form - Cup Win & Friendly Positives

The Wanderers finished bottom of the pile in the A-League last term, winning just five games.

Ufuk Talay has stepped in as new manager, with the Wanderers getting off the mark with a 2-0 win over Tigers FC in the Australia Cup R32.

Two second-half goals in the space of five minutes from new signing Miguel Di Pizio and striker Brandon Borrello earned Western Sydney the win.

The Wanderers then backed up with a good showing against Chelsea in last week's Sydney Super Cup friendly.

Anthony Pantazopoulos, Aydan Hammond, Dylan Scicluna, and Awan Lual all found the back of the net as the Wanderers showcased some encouraging signs in attack.

Melbourne Victory Form - Routine Start For Savarese

Victory are two-time Australia Cup champions and finished runner-up in 2024.

They've already eclipsed last year's showing when they suffered a 'Cupset' against Olympic Kingsway.

Giovanni Savarese is the new man in charge and he oversaw a routine 4-0 win for Victory over Kingsborough in the Round of 32.

Philipp Ziereis, Matthew Grimaldi, Clarismario Santos, and Keegan Jelacic all got on the scoresheet for Victory.

Verdict

The Wanderers are backed as home outsiders in a game that sees under 2.5 goals.
