Nick Kyrgios, after a five-month injury break, returned to action in Stuttgart and now heads to Mallorca to face fellow Australian Adam Walton—who advanced through qualifying. Both players have question marks over consistency and fitness, but Kyrgios’s strong grass-court record and prior main-draw win in Mallorca make him the match favorite. Walton, though experienced at Challenger level, has yet to shine consistently at ATP tour-level events. This will be their first head-to-head. Kyrgios's comeback momentum could prove key in this grass-court showdown.

Nick Kyrgios returned to action after a five-month absence in Stuttgart last week and immediately reminded everyone of the level he can produce on grass. Despite the lack of match practice, he looked remarkably comfortable on the surface, which has always brought the best out of his game.

The biggest concern remains his fitness and physical durability over the course of a match, particularly given his limited playing schedule in recent years.

Kyrgios Looks To Set The Tone

  • Walton holds a 2–2 record in opening-round matches at tour-level grass events.
  • He owns a 21–8 record against players outside the Top 100.
  • Kyrgios cleared the opening round in his only previous appearance in Mallorca.
  • He holds a 24–9 career record against fellow Australians.

Walton Comes Through Qualifying in Mallorca

Adam Walton secured his place in the Mallorca main draw after coming through qualifying with victories over two opponents ranked outside the top 300. The results were a welcome response after his disappointing qualifying defeat to lower-ranked Harry Wendelken at Queen's Club last week.

The Australian has been a consistent performer on the Challenger circuit, but he has struggled to translate that success to tour-level events. Walton has played 12 ATP-level tournaments this season and has failed to record multiple main-draw wins at any of them, while also suffering seven first-round or qualifying exits.

Grass-court opportunities at tour level have been limited throughout his career. Walton has made only four ATP main-draw appearances on the surface and has collected just two main-draw wins. One of those victories came in Mallorca, where he reached the second round in 2024.

Kyrgios Looking to Add to His Comeback

Nick Kyrgios returned to competition last week in Stuttgart, playing his first match in six months. The Australian opened with a win over Corentin Moutet but was unable to build on it, losing to Sho Shimabukuro after taking the first set.

Despite the defeat, the week represented a positive step for Kyrgios, who has played only a handful of matches over the last three years due to persistent wrist and knee injuries. Simply getting matches under his belt remains an important part of his comeback.

The former Wimbledon finalist has limited experience in Mallorca. His only previous appearance came in 2022, when he won his opening match before giving a walkover ahead of the second round.

Verdict

While Kyrgios has the quality to make a strong start, there is always a risk that physical issues could become a factor as the match progresses. Backing Kyrgios to win the first set, a tiebreak to be played, and over 22.5 games in the match are the angles that best reflect the likely shape of this contest.
