Alexei Popyrin has played ten sets against Matteo Berrettini, five of them going the distance. I am expecting a long match in Rome where the tie break markets are in play.

Popyrin 4-12 in 2026

Alexei Popyrin ended 2025 with five consecutive defeats and started 2026 with five straight losses. He has now lost 11 of his previous 12 matches against Top 50 players.

The 26-year-old saw some improvement on clay in Houston. He battled past Patrick Kypson and Alex Michelsen in 3 sets to reach the quarter-finals, suffering a narrow 3-6 6-4 7-6 defeat to 2nd seed Frances Tiafoe.

Popyrin has lost both matches since, 6-3 6-4 to Casper Ruud in Monte Carlo and 7-6 6-4 against Martin Damm in Madrid.

Berrettini Down to 100

Matteo Berrettini started the year on clay in South America where he failed to impress. He was unable to get past the third round in Indian Wells and Miami.

The Italian produced an incredible result in Monte Carlo where he thrashed Daniil Medvedev 6-0 6-0. He ran into Joao Fonseca in the third round, going down in straight sets.

The 30-year-old suffered another straight sets defeat to qualifier Dino Prizmic in his opening match in Madrid. He went to the Cagliari Challenger to build some confidence, beating Patrick Kypson and Mariano Navone before a 3 sets quarter-final defeat to Hubert Hurkacz.

Berrettini comes to Rome ranked 100, a long way from the World No.6 position he occupied in 2022.

Verdict

Alexei Popyrin v Matteo Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini comes into this clash as a short priced favourite despite dropping to World No.1. Tie breaks are a regular occurrence between these players, the trend to continue in Rome.
