The Delray Beach Open runs from February 16 to 22, 2026, and even though it is on outdoor hard courts, it plays very slow by ATP standards. This is one of the slowest hard court stops on tour, with long rallies and physical matches that often feel closer to clay than a typical North American swing event.

It remains an ATP 250 with prize money set at USD 700,045 and has been staged at the Delray Beach Tennis Center since 1999. Rankings do not always decide things here. Players who handle the slower conditions and stay patient from the baseline usually get the edge.

Tournament Snapshot

  • Location: Delray Beach, Florida, USA
  • Dates: 16–22 February 2026
  • Category: ATP 250
  • Surface: Outdoor Hard
  • Prize Money: $700,045

Founded in 1993, the event has evolved through multiple names before adopting its current identity in 2014. It traditionally kicks off the American spring hard-court phase.

Playing Conditions

Delray Beach produces conditions closer to altitude clay events like Gstaad, Madrid or Geneva than to typical American hard courts.

Court Speed (5-Year Average)
  • 71.2% First Serve Points Won
  • 79.1% Service Holds
  • 0.50 Aces per Game
  • 0.20 Tie-breaks per Set

These numbers confirm one thing: this is slow.

Why It Plays So Slow:
  • Balls become heavy and fluffy due to high humidity
  • Significant wind impact
  • Big difference between day vs night sessions
  • Day sessions: Higher bounce, favors topspin players
  • Night sessions: Slower, more humid, lower pace

Players consistently complain about the heavy balls and unforgiving margins.

Recent Champions

The recent editions of the Delray Beach Open underline how unique these conditions are. Despite being a hard-court event, the slow, humid and often windy environment rewards patient baseliners and physically durable competitors far more than pure big servers.

  • 2025: Miomir Kecmanović def. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina — 3–6, 6–1, 7–5
  • 2024: Taylor Fritz (2) def. Tommy Paul — 6–2, 6–3
  • 2023: Taylor Fritz def. Miomir Kecmanović — 6–0, 5–7, 6–2
  • 2022: Cameron Norrie def. Reilly Opelka — 7–6(7–1), 7–6(7–4)
  • 2021: Hubert Hurkacz def. Sebastian Korda — 6–3, 6–3
  • 2020: Reilly Opelka def. Yoshihito Nishioka — 7–5, 6–7(4–7), 6–2

Taylor Fritz remains the standout of the modern era with two titles, while recent finals consistently highlight players capable of adapting to heavy balls, long rallies and difficult wind patterns.

Top Seeds Overview

The 2026 edition of the Delray Beach Open features a balanced group of contenders, headlined by a two-time champion, elite clay-court consistency and several Americans comfortable in tricky, windy conditions. On one of the slowest hard courts on the ATP calendar, patience and physical resilience could outweigh raw serving power.

With slow, heavy balls and frequent wind disruption, players who can grind from the baseline and adapt between day and night sessions should hold the edge as the week progresses.

Players to Watch

Casper Ruud
Coming off a fantastic January and a very positive personal milestone with the birth of his first child, Ruud returns in a confident and settled frame of mind. The slow, heavy conditions in Delray suit his heavy topspin and baseline consistency perfectly. If he settles quickly into match rhythm, he should be one of the leading contenders for the title.

Frances Tiafoe
A former champion here, Tiafoe clearly has no issues handling the tricky elements in Florida. The key for him will be finding timing early in the week. If his shot selection stays disciplined and he embraces longer rallies, he absolutely has the level to make another deep run and even go all the way.

Learner Tien
After a rare early setback last week, a rebound feels likely. His experience on American hard courts and comfort in baseline exchanges make him a dangerous opponent in these conditions. If he rediscovers his rhythm quickly, he has a strong chance to push into the latter stages.

Taylor Fritz
A two-time former champion and the top seed, Fritz cannot be ignored on paper. However, form and fitness concerns cloud his outlook. He has not looked fully sharp this season, and a demanding week in Melbourne adds further uncertainty. Given the slow conditions that blunt his serve, an early exit would not be a major surprise.

Verdict

Casper Ruud, Frances Tiafoe and Learner Tien all enter this week as joint leading contenders, with the slow, heavy conditions perfectly aligning with their baseline strengths and physical resilience.

Taylor Fritz, despite his past success here, looks vulnerable given current form and fitness concerns, making him a player to oppose from the very start of the tournament.
