The historic Hamburg Open returns to the iconic Rothenbaum Tennis Center, where 32 top singles players and 16 doubles teams compete on one of the ATP Tour’s most prestigious clay-court stages. As one of only 16 ATP 500 events on the calendar, the tournament combines elite-level tennis with a unique atmosphere in front of passionate German crowds, while the retractable-roof center court adds a modern touch to the traditional venue.

Formerly known as the German Open Championships, Hamburg is the fifth-oldest tennis tournament in the world and has crowned some of the greatest clay-court players in history. The event gained extra significance for local fans in 2023 when Alexander Zverev became the first German singles champion in Hamburg in 30 years, ending a long wait for home success at Rothenbaum.

Tournament Overview

The tournament gained added significance for German tennis fans in 2023 when Alexander Zverev became the first home singles champion in Hamburg in 30 years.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

The conditions at the Hamburg Open traditionally provide a balanced clay-court test, rewarding players who combine patience, physical endurance, and strong baseline consistency. The outdoor clay courts at Rothenbaum generally produce medium-paced conditions with a reliable bounce, allowing heavy topspin players to build points effectively while still giving aggressive shot-makers opportunities to attack.

Players to Watch

Felix Auger-Aliassime
The top seed enters Hamburg with the highest ceiling in the field, but consistency remains the biggest question mark. When his aggressive baseline game and first serve are firing, he can dominate almost anyone on this surface, though his recent performances have been unpredictable. If he settles early and finds rhythm quickly, he has the level to go all the way.

Flavio Cobolli
The defending champion looks like one of the most dangerous value picks in the draw. Cobolli already proved his comfort on German clay earlier this season with a strong run in Munich, and his heavy baseline game suits the Hamburg conditions perfectly. With confidence from last year’s title run, he could easily make another deep campaign here.

Francisco Cerúndolo
Cerundolo arguably arrives as one of the strongest pure clay-court players in the field. Although he faces a difficult opening test, his overall level on clay gives him realistic title potential if he survives the early rounds. His topspin-heavy forehand, physical consistency, and ability to control long rallies make him a serious contender in Hamburg.

Luciano Darderi
Darderi comes into Hamburg after a physically demanding stretch, so fatigue could become a concern later in the week. Still, his recent clay-court level has been excellent, and few players in the draw can match his intensity and heavy ball-striking from the baseline. If his energy holds up, he has the tools to trouble anyone in the tournament.

Verdict

Despite some recent inconsistency, Felix Auger-Aliassime still looks like the player with the highest upside in the field and remains a strong title contender if he finds rhythm early. Defending champion Flavio Cobolli also stands out as a dangerous pick given his proven success in Hamburg and comfort on German clay.

Meanwhile, Francisco Cerúndolo and Luciano Darderi both look capable of making deep runs if they maintain their current clay-court level.
