Alcaraz on Top of Men's Tennis

Carlos Alcaraz reclaimed the World No.1 spot last year, winning the French Open and US Open alongside a final appearance at Wimbledon.

The Spaniard started the year with Samuel Lopez as his new coach following the departure of Juan Carlos Ferrero.

The 22-year-old proved that the move paid off after winning the Australian Open and becoming the youngest man to win the Career Grand Slam.

Alcaraz didn’t drop a set on the way to the semi-finals where he came through an epic 5 set clash against Alexander Zverev that went over five hours. He came back to beat Novak Djokovic 2-6 6-2 6-3 7-5 in the final.

Alcaraz discussed the achievement in Melbourne: “It's a great feeling. Completing a Career Grand Slam was something that was on my mind.”

“Every time that I come here to Australia, I just have preseason with my mind on this tournament to try to work as hard as I can and to be as well-prepared as I can, to play this tournament and try to get the trophy.”

“In the previous years, I haven't gone in a good way, but I am really happy that I just pushed myself to be better and finally came this year.”

Rinderknech Still Searching

Arthur Rinderknech continues his quest for an ATP Tour title, going close in Shanghai last year. He beat Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev to reach the final where he lost in 3 sets to Valentin Vacherot.

The Frenchman is 1-2 against Top 50 players this year, the sole victory coming against Flavio Cobolli at the United Cup.

The 30-year-old competed in Rotterdam last week where he suffered a 7-5 6-3 first round defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Verdict

Carlos Alcaraz won the Australian Open and will surely claim more titles this year. Arthur Rinderknech has kept the first set close in all four defeats against the World No.1, the trend to continue in Qatar.
