Rybakina Starts Clay Season Strongly

Elena Rybakina began her clay season with a solid 6-3, 6-4 win over Diana Shnaider. She fired nine aces and did not face a single break point.

This marks her second quarterfinal appearance in Stuttgart. After early exits in her first two visits, she lifted the title here in 2024, defeating players like Iga Swiatek and Jasmine Paolini.

The Kazakh has maintained strong form since the second half of last season. Aside from a setback in the Middle East swing, including a retirement loss to Antonia Ruzic, she has delivered consistent results with a title at the Australian Open, a final in Indian Wells, and a semifinal in Miami.

Rybakina holds a 6-3 record in tour-level clay quarterfinals and most recently won the title in Strasbourg last year, highlighting her strength on this surface.

Fernandez Pulls Off Stunning Comeback

Leylah Fernandez pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat Zeynep Sonmez 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 and reach the quarterfinals in Stuttgart. She trailed 1-5 in the deciding set before producing a dramatic turnaround.

This marks the first time this season she has recorded back-to-back wins on tour. Prior to this week, she had won just four matches across nine tournaments, struggling to match her form from last year.

Fernandez has limited success on clay at tour level, with her only deep run coming at the French Open 2022, where she reached the quarterfinal.

She holds an 11-11 record in tour-level quarterfinals and is currently on a three-match winning streak at this stage, giving her confidence heading into the next round.

Verdict

Leylah Fernandez has shown strong resilience this week, but based on current form and ability on this surface, she is unlikely to match Elena Rybakina’s level right now.
