Diana Shnaider advanced to the semifinals at Roland Garros after defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0. She trailed by a set and 1-4 before producing a remarkable turnaround to win the match. Notably, she won the final 10 games in a row.
The victory also ended Sabalenka's streak of six consecutive Grand Slam semifinal appearances. It was a stunning performance from Shnaider, who had won only two matches in her three previous appearances at the French Open before this year.
The 22-year-old arrived in Paris short on confidence after failing to win multiple matches in seven of her previous nine tournaments. Many of those defeats came against Top 20 opponents, a run that pushed her outside the Top 20 in the rankings.
This run has changed everything. Shnaider is set to return to the Top 20 and is now chasing her first clay-court final since winning the title in Budapest in 2024, which remains the only clay title of her career.
This is the first Grand Slam semifinal of Shnaider's career, having never previously gone beyond the quarterfinal stage at a major. She heads into the semifinals with a 6-7 record in tour-level semifinals.
