Pegula Stretches Winning Run

Jessica Pegula moved into the quarterfinal after defeating Belinda Bencic 6-3 7-6 in Indian Wells. She was a break down in both sets but recovered well to close the match in straight sets.

This is just Pegula’s second quarterfinal appearance here. Her previous run came in 2021, where she lost to Victoria Azarenka in straight sets.

With this victory, Pegula has now extended her winning streak to eight matches after winning the title in Dubai. She is also aiming for her eighth consecutive semifinal on tour, a streak that began at the US Open last year.

Since the start of 2021, Pegula has played 21 quarterfinals on tour and won 18 of them. Her only three losses at this stage came against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Rybakina Advances as Kartal Retires

Elena Rybakina booked her quarterfinal spot after Sonay Kartal retired while trailing 4-6 3-4 due to injury. Earlier this week, Rybakina defeated Marta Kostyuk and Hailey Baptiste.

This is Rybakina’s third quarterfinal appearance in Indian Wells. She converted one of them into the title in 2023, her first WTA 1000 trophy, while her other run ended in a loss to Maria Sakkari in 2022.

Apart from a second-round retirement in Dubai, Rybakina has reached the quarterfinal in every tournament she has played this season. She won the title at the Australian Open and finished runner-up in Brisbane and Doha.

Overall, she has played 18 quarterfinals at WTA 1000 events, winning 11 of them. Her two most recent losses at this stage came against Victoria Mboko in Doha and Aryna Sabalenka in Wuhan.
