This will be the first match between Mariano Navone and Alexander Zverev.


Mariano Navone lost seven of his opening nine matches this year which included a 2-3 record on clay. He won the Cap Cana Challenger on hard courts but went out early in Indian Wells and Miami.

The Argentine returned to clay and won his first ATP Tour title in Bucharest, getting it done without facing a Top 60 player. He lost 6-4 7-5 to Andrey Rublev in the first round in Barcelona.

The 25-year-old had few issues in his opening match in Madrid, saving 1/3 break points in a 6-3 6-4 victory over Nuno Borges.

Zverev Chasing Third Title in Madrid


Alexander Zverev has been very consistent this year, reaching five semi-finals but losing them all.  Four of those defeats came against Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

The German was the top seed in Munich where he was unable to win a fourth title. He needed 3 sets to get past Miomir Kecmanovic and Francisco Cerundolo before a 6-3 6-3 semi-final defeat to Flavio Cobolli.

Zverev is a two-time champion in Madrid, his last title coming in 2021 when he beat Carlos Alcaraz 6-3 6-1 in the final.

Verdict

Alexander Zverev is a two-time champion in Madrid but is yet to reach a final this year. Mariano Navone can stick around a while here, but Zverev should have too much class for the Argentine.
