Mirra Andreeva and Marta Kostyuk set up a compelling Madrid Open final. Andreeva, though consistent and a champion on several big stages, faces a demanding schedule, having made both singles and doubles finals. Kostyuk, in contrast, brings recent momentum and confidence after becoming the first Ukrainian to reach a Madrid final and winning all her clay matches this season. The key factor could be Andreeva’s workload, with Kostyuk’s fresher legs making her the slight favorite in this closely matched final.

Andreeva Ends Baptiste Dream Run

Mirra Andreeva ended Hailey Baptiste’s breakthrough run with a 6-4, 7-6 win to reach the Madrid final. She won 81% of her first-serve points and converted two of four break chances in a composed performance.

This is her third WTA 1000 final, making her the youngest player to reach that mark since the format began in 2009. She previously won back-to-back titles at this level, defeating Clara Tauson and Aryna Sabalenka in the finals of Dubai and Indian Wells last year.

After a strong Australian swing, she struggled during her title defenses between Doha and Miami, winning only four matches in that stretch. However, she has bounced back impressively on clay, winning 12 of her last 13 matches, including a title in Linz.

Andreeva now holds an excellent 5-1 record in tour-level finals, including titles in Adelaide and Linz this year. Her only loss in a final came against Daria Kasatkina in Ningbo in 2024.

Kostyuk Eyes Biggest Career Title

Marta Kostyuk defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 to reach the final in Madrid. She was broken four times but responded strongly by breaking her opponent six times to control the match.

With this victory, she becomes the first Ukrainian to reach the Madrid final since the tournament began in 2009. She is also the third Ukrainian to reach a WTA 1000 final after Elina Svitolina and Anhelina Kalinina.

The 23-year-old was sidelined for two months after an injury at the Australian Open and struggled on her return during the Sunshine Double, with early losses including defeats to Elena Rybakina.

However, she has rediscovered her form on clay, winning all 11 of her matches this season on the surface, including the title in Rouen.

Kostyuk has now reached five tour-level finals in her career, winning two of them, both at WTA 250 level in Austin 2023 and Rouen earlier this year. On clay, she holds a 1-1 record in finals and will now look to improve that in Madrid.

Verdict

Mirra Andreeva has put together a strong week, reaching both the singles and doubles finals, but the workload could catch up with her. Marta Kostyuk, on the other hand, comes in confident after her earlier win in this matchup and brings solid momentum, giving her the edge here.
