Naomi Osaka is set for her Bad Homburg Open return after a solid clay season, facing Poland’s Magdalena Frech in their first-ever head-to-head. Osaka remains the on-paper favorite thanks to her Top 20 status and major tour-level titles despite limited play due to injuries. Frech, although struggling in recent grass events, arrives with added match practice on the surface and a runner-up finish earlier this season. Expect a competitive battle as Frech’s grass-court confidence could challenge Osaka, suggesting betting value in over games or Frech taking a set.

Frech’s extra match practice on grass could make this more competitive than expected. Osaka has the edge, but over games and Frech to take a set offer value.

Frech Searches For Momentum

  • Osaka holds a 5–1 record in opening-round matches this year.
  • She owns an impressive 10–2 record against Top 20 players in 2026.
  • Frech has won just one main-draw match across her last 8 grass-court events.
  • She has lost 10 of her last 11 matches against Top 20 players.

Osaka Returns to Action in Bad Homburg

Naomi Osaka returns to competition for the first time since Roland Garros, where she reached the fourth round after defeating Donna Vekic and Iva Jovic before falling to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets.

The Japanese star has played a limited schedule this season due to recurring abdominal issues, but she has still managed to produce several strong results. Her highlights include fourth-round appearances at Indian Wells, Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros, as well as a third-round run at the Australian Open.

Those performances have helped her remain inside the Top 20 despite missing multiple events.

Osaka is making her second appearance in Bad Homburg this week. On her tournament debut last year, she cleared the opening round before losing to Emma Navarro in the second round, and she will be aiming for a deeper run this time around.

Frech Seeks Revival in Bad Homburg

Magdalena Frech failed to capitalize on her opportunity in Berlin last week. After losing in the final round of qualifying, she received a lucky loser spot in the main draw but was unable to take advantage, falling to Eva Lys in the opening round.

The Pole was ranked close to the Top 20 at this stage last year, but a disappointing second half of the season, including her failure to defend the Guadalajara title, pushed her outside the Top 50.

Although she showed signs of recovery with a runner-up finish in Merida earlier this season, she has struggled to maintain that level in recent months.

Frech is now making her second appearance in Bad Homburg. On her debut last year, she suffered a three-set defeat to Clara Tauson and will be hoping for a better result this time around.

Verdict

Magdalena Frech has already played three matches on grass, which should help her arrive with confidence and valuable match rhythm. Naomi Osaka is the favorite on paper, but her record on grass remains relatively modest compared to other surfaces. That could make this a tighter contest than the odds suggest, with over games and Frech to win a set standing out as attractive options in this matchup.
