Stefanos Tsitsipas comes into this clash outside the Top 40 for the first time since 2018. Denis Shapovalov is a temperamental player who can win this one at decent odds.

Tsitsipas Slipping Down the Rankings

Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Taylor Fritz at the United Cup but was unable to get past the second round in Adelaide, the Australian Open and Rotterdam.

The 27-year-old defeated Daniil Medvedev in Doha before a 6-3 7-6 quarter-final defeat to Andrey Rublev, winning 41% of his 2nd serves.

The Greek went out in his first match in Dubai, beaten 6-4 7-5 by Ugo Humbert. The defeat saw Tsitsipas slip to 43 in the rankings, the last time he was outside the Top 40 was in May 2018.

Shapovalov Up and Down

Denis Shapovalov started 2026 in poor form, losing to qualifier Raphael Collignon in Brisbane and Marin Cilic in the Australian Open second round.

The Canadian improved in Dallas Open where he was he defending champion, getting past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to reach the semi-finals. He won the first set against Ben Shelton before going down 4-6 6-4 7-6.

Shapovalov had a shocker in Dubai, defeated 6-2 6-4 by World No.124 Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round. He won just 36% of his 2nd serves and saved 4/9 break points.

Verdict

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Denis Shapovalov are inconsistent players who can never be trusted to win. Shapovalov is the outsider here and my pick to advance in Indian Wells.
