Naomi Osaka advances to the Bad Homburg semifinals after a convincing win over Ekaterina Alexandrova, capitalizing on her top form this season. Xinyu Wang progressed with a walkover and two straight-set wins, marking a solid run after recent struggles. While Wang displays good momentum, Osaka's superior experience—especially in big matches and semifinals—positions her as the favorite in their first career meeting. Expect Osaka to capitalize on this chance to vie for the grass-court title.

Wang has carried good form into this week and has progressed with ease, but Osaka’s current level and greater experience in big matches give her the edge to advance.

Osaka Looks To Keep Rolling

  • Xinyu Wang holds a 2–8 career record in tour-level semifinals.
  • She has lost six of her last seven matches against Top 20 players.
  • Osaka lost her only previous grass-court semifinal in Nottingham in 2018.
  • She owns a 12–2 record against players outside the Top 20 in 2026.

Wang Extends Eastbourne Campaign

Xinyu Wang moved into the semifinals after receiving a walkover from Elina Svitolina. Earlier in the week, she defeated Renata Zarazua and Leylah Fernandez in straight sets to reach the last four.

Before this week, Wang had recorded multiple main-draw wins on grass only twice in her career, reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon and the final in Berlin. Those remained her only tour-level quarterfinal-or-better results on the surface before this tournament, with the Berlin run also being her maiden WTA final.

The 23-year-old arrived in Eastbourne on a disappointing run, having failed to record multiple main-draw wins at any tour event since February. Earlier this season, she reached the final in Auckland, the fourth round at the Australian Open, and the quarterfinals in Cluj-Napoca.

Wang holds a 2-8 career record in tour-level semifinals. One of those two victories came earlier this year in Auckland.

Naomi Osaka Continues Strong Week in Germany

Naomi Osaka secured her place in the Bad Homburg semifinals with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Japanese won 94% of her first-service points and converted five of the seven break points she created during the match.

This is only the second grass-court semifinal of Osaka's career. Her previous appearance at this stage came in 's-Hertogenbosch in 2018, where she lost to Ashleigh Barty in straight sets.

Recurring abdominal issues limited her schedule earlier this season, but she has still produced solid results. Osaka has now won at least two matches in six of the seven tournaments she has played this year, including this week's run in Bad Homburg.

Osaka holds a 13-5 record in tour-level semifinals. Her most recent semifinal ended in defeat to Amanda Anisimova at the US Open last year.

Verdict

Xinyu Wang has won both of her matches comfortably and will be eager to make up for the ranking points she lost from Berlin. Naomi Osaka, meanwhile, has been playing some of her best tennis this season and will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity to challenge for the title. Considering her current level and overall ability, Osaka enters this clash as the favorite.
