APR and Gor Mahia open their 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup campaigns with a Group A encounter set for Friday. Both teams boast attacking prowess but have been inconsistent defensively, making an open, goal-laden match quite likely. APR come into the tie with strong momentum after a runner-up finish in Rwanda and recent cup triumph, while Gor Mahia arrive as Kenyan champions. Historically, APR have held the upper hand, but Gor Mahia claimed victory in the last meeting. Expect end-to-end action and both teams getting on the scoresheet.

APR and Gor Mahia square off in their opening Group A clash at the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup on Friday.

Both teams have quality going forward, but with neither defence looking particularly convincing, goals could be expected in this one.

Key Stats

  • APR have scored in nine of their last 10 matches in all competitions.
  • APR have conceded in seven of their last 10 matches in all competitions.
  • Gor Mahia have scored in four of their last six matches in all competitions.
  • Gor Mahia have conceded in three of their last four matches in all competitions.

APR on Top

APR have the upper hand in this fixture, with three wins and a draw from five previous meetings, while Gor Mahia have been victorious just once.

However, the Kenyans’ only victory came in the most recent meeting, claiming a 3-1 victory in a CAF Champions League qualifying clash back in 2020.

APR in Good Form

APR will be feeling confident heading into the Kagame Cup after a solid campaign in the Rwanda Premier League. They finished second in the table and only suffered four defeats throughout the season.

Taleb Abderrahim’s team were almost unstoppable in the final weeks of the season, ending the campaign with four straight league wins, including a 2-0 victory over Gicumbi in their last fixture. They also won the Peace Cup, beating Rayon Sport on penalties after playing out a 0-0 draw in normal time.

APR are solid going forward and have scored in nine of their last 10 matches in all competitions. However, they can be a bit shaky at the back and have conceded in seven of those 10 fixtures.

Gor Mahia Holding Their Own

Gor Mahia are also coming off a successful domestic campaign after emerging champions of the Kenyan Premier League. They led the league for much of the season and cruised to their 22nd domestic title.

The Kenyan giants ended the season in good form, as they went unbeaten in eight of their final 10 matches in all competitions. However, the last competitive outing for Charles Akonnor’s team was in May when they suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Nairobi United.

One similarity with APR is that Gor Mahia also have some attacking quality, scoring in four of their last six matches in all competitions. However, they have conceded in three of the last four fixtures in this run.

Team News and Predicted Line-ups

APR (4-3-3): Ernan Siluane; Hakim Bugingo, Alexis Nduwayo, Madou Zon, Fitina Omborenga; Pacifique Ngabonziza, Dauda Yussif Seidu, Mamadou Toure; Hadji Iraguha, Hakim Kiwanuka, Djibril Ouattara.

APR have no major injuries or suspensions heading into this clash. Nduwayo is set to feature in central defence while Ouattara should lead the line once again, with Iraguha providing support.

Gor Mahia (4-2-3-1): Bryne Odhiambo; Sylvester Owino, Mike Kibwage, Geoffrey Ochieng, Lewis Bandi; Lawrence Juma, Alpha Onyango; Ben Omondi, Enoch Machaga, Samuel Kapen; Felix Oluoch.

Oluoch is set to lead the line for Gor Mahia while captain Onyango should start in midfield. The duo of Kibwage and Ochieng are expected to form a central defensive partnership.
