Argentina vs Switzerland Predictions & Betting Tips - More Messi Magic Expected in the World Cup Quarter-Finals

Lionel Messi continues to steer Argentina through the World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals despite some nervy knockout round performances. Argentina, undefeated in the tournament, are strong favorites against a Swiss team that has struggled to impress beyond the group stage. Switzerland progressed past Colombia on penalties, but key player Johan Manzambi may be absent due to injury. With Messi in exceptional form and a talented supporting cast, Argentina look poised to advance, while Switzerland will need a marked improvement to challenge the defending champions.

Argentina haven’t been convincing in the knockout rounds but Lionel Messi continues to be the difference maker.

Switzerland were outplayed by Colombia, their World Cup campaign set to end in the quarter-finals.

HTH - Argentina Undefeated

Argentina have met Switzerland on seven occasions, winning four times alongside three draws. They last met in the 2014 World Cup Round of 16, Ángel Di María's extra time goal securing a 1-0 win.

Argentina Aiming for Back to Back Titles

Argentina had no problems in the group stage, Lionel Messi stating his intent by hitting a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Algeria. He scored another two goals in a 2-0 victory against Austria.

Messi came off the bench against Jordan but still had enough time to find the net, scoring the final goal as La Albiceleste beat Jordan 3-1 in Dallas.

Lionel Scaloni's side have showed some vulnerabilities in the knockout rounds. They were taken to extra time by Cabo Verde, winning 3-2 thanks to a late own goal.

It was looking bleak against Egypt who led 2-0 with time running out. Messi assisted Cristian Romero and scored himself before Enzo Fernández’s added time goal sealed another 3-2 victory and a spot in the quarter-finals.

Argentina Team News & Predicted Line Up

Lionel Scaloni could consider making a switch at left-back, Facundo Medina a chance to replace Nicolás Tagliafico. Lautaro Martínez and Julián Alvarez compete for a spot up front next to Messi.

Argentina (4-4-2): Emiliano Martínez; Nahuel Molina, Cristián Romero, Lisandro Martínez, Facundo Medina; Rodrigo De Paul, Leandro Paredes, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister; Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martínez

Switzerland Sneak Through

Switzerland dominated Qatar in their World Cup opener, conceding a late own goal in a 1-1 draw. Johan Manzambi scored twice in a 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, three of their goals coming against 10 men.

Murat Yakin brought Manzambi into the starting side against Canada and he made it count, assisting Rubén Vargas and scoring again in a 2-1 win in Vancouver.

The Swiss side took advantage of a favourable draw in the Round of 32, Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scoring in a 2-0 victory against Algeria.

Switzerland were outplayed by Colombia but snuck through to reach the quarter-finals. They ended the match with 7-15 shots and 0.38-1.09 expected goals, a 0-0 draw after extra time before winning the penalty shootout.

Switzerland Team New & Predicted Line Up

Johan Manzambi missed the Colombia match due to knee injury with his situation still unclear. He has been one of the breakout stars of the tournament and his absence would be a big one.

Rubén Vargas and Djibril Sow came off the bench and could be options to start here, Ardon Jashari and Fabian Rieder the players likely to make way.

Switzerland (4-2-3-1): Gregor Kobel; Denis Zakaria, Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodríguez; Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler; Dan Ndoye, Djibril Sow, Rubén Vargas; Breel Embolo

Verdict

Lionel Messi has taken over the World Cup, willing Argentina into the quarter-finals where they are deserved favourites. I can’t see Switzerland stopping the defending champions, Messi to play a decisive role once again.
