Chelsea Improving Slowly Under Alonso

Chelsea have shown quality in pre-season with two wins and a draw from five friendly matches.

The Blues started the Xabi Alonso era with a 6-4 victory against Western Sydney Wanderers. Consecutive losses against Tottenham 2-1 and Juventus 1-0 followed.

The Premier League side replied positively with a commanding 3-0 win against AC Milan. Joao Pedro scored twice and Moises Caicedo also struck as Chelsea dominated with 2.18 XG.

A second-string XI then drew 3-3 against Malaysian opponents Johor Darul Ta'zim just 24 hours later. The Blues had to come from behind twice to secure the draw and Liam Delap netted two penalty goals.

Real Sociedad Inconsistent Ahead of 2026/27

LaLiga side Real Sociedad had a poor end to the 2025/26 season and failed to win any of their final nine fixtures.

That slump continued into pre-season as Sociedad lost 1-0 at Ligue 2 side Pau FC and drew 1-1 against Racing Santander.

The White and Blues recovered with back-to-back wins against English sides Wolves 2-1 and Aston Villa 4-2. They couldn’t build on those victories and lost 2-1 at Toulouse.

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side then fell to a second consecutive defeat after a 2-1 loss at FC Koln. Real Sociedad trailed after five minutes and levelled through an own goal before Koln struck a second late on.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Robert Sanchez; Reece James, Josh Acheampong, Maxence Lacroix, Jorrel Hato; Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia; Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, Estevao; Joao Pedro

Midfielder and new signing Jordan Henderson is doubtful following a wrist injury.

Defensive pair Malo Gusto and Wesley Fofana are also ruled out with injuries.

Attacker Morgan Rogers, defender Maxence Lacroix and midfielder Valentin Barco could make their Chelsea debuts here.

Real Sociedad (4-3-3): Alex Remiro; Jon Aramburu, Igor Zubeldia, Jon Martin, Sergio Gomez; Yangel Herrera, Carlos Soler, Benat Turrientes; Ander Barrenetxea, Mikel Oyarzabal, Alex Marchal

Defender Alvaro Odriozola and midfielder Jon Gorrotxategi are unavailable with long-term injuries.

Mikel Oyarzabal is available for selection after missing the last four games. The forward was granted additional holiday after the 2026 World Cup.

Verdict

Chelsea are likely to field a full-strength side in their final pre-season friendly. The Blues have class in their ranks and can comfortably beat Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge.
