Egypt are coming off a poor Arab Cup campaign and while this is a different squad, Nigeria are hard to beat. I think both nations will be content with a draw before the real action begins at AFCON.

Key Stats - Hard to Beat Teams

  • Egypt are undefeated in 15 of their last 17 matches.
  • Nigeria are undefeated in 16 of their last 18 matches.

Nigeria Lead the HTH

Little has separated these nations since the first clash in 1963, Nigeria leading 6-5 alongside six draws.

The last meeting came at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Kelechi Iheanacho scoring as Nigeria won 1-0 in Cameroon.

Egypt Haven't Won in Five

Egypt haven’t won a competitive match since October when they qualified for the World Cup. They ended the year with two friendlies, a 2-0 defeat to Uzbekistan and 1-1 draw against Cape Verde.

Helmy Toulan took charge of the recent FIFA Arab Cup campaign which ended in a group stage exit.

The Pharaohs needed late goals to secure 1-1 draws against Kuwait and United Arab Emirates. They had 2.57-2.92 xG against Jordan in the final group game, a 3-0 defeat that saw their tournament end early.

Nigeria Looking to Bounce Back

Nigeria are still reeling after a failed World Cup qualification campaign. They finished one point behind South Africa in Group C but were good enough to reach the second round.

Eric Chelle’s side met Gabon in the semi-finals and allowed a late goal to take it to extra time.
Chidera Ejuke put them ahead and Victor Osimhen bagged a brace as they ran out 4-1 winners.

Frank Onyeka gave the Super Eagles an early lead against DR Congo in the final, but they conceded and were eventually outplayed, missing three penalties to go out in the shootout.

Verdict

Egypt and Nigeria don’t lose very often and neither nation will want to go to AFCON with a defeat under their belt. I don’t see much in this one, a draw my best bet in Cairo.
