In what will be remembered as a definitive World Cup classic, England survived a cauldron at Estadio Azteca where they defeated co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in a breathtaking Round of 16 clash.

Despite playing nearly the entire second half with ten men, the Three Lions rode a spectacular Jude Bellingham brace and some vital late-game resilience to silence a frantic home crowd and advance to the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals.

El Tri had not conceded a single goal all tournament but England’s superior quality proved to be the difference in Mexico City.

Match Report - Bellingham's Brilliance and Pickford’s Defiance

Mexico dominated early on but England’s lethal transition play quickly stunned the stadium. In the 36th minute, Bukayo Saka delivered a perfect cross that Jude Bellingham headed past Raúl Rangel.

Bellingham struck again just two minutes later after capitalising on a turnover in midfield. Harry Kane turned provider, sliding a precise pass to the Real Madrid superstar who calmly slotted home.

El Tri responded in the 42nd minute, Julián Quiñones unleashing an unstoppable strike from close range, breathing life back into the host nation.

Pickford denied Raúl Jiménez before the break as the drama escalated in the 54th minute, defender Jarell Quansah shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a challenge on Jesús Gallardo.

With the Three Lions reduced to ten men, Tuchel sacrificed Saka for John Stones to shore up the defense. England found a lifeline in the 60th minute when Anthony Gordon was brought down in the box by Rangel, Kane stepping up to the penalty spot where he scored his sixth goal of the tournament.

The penalty drama wasn't finished, Kane committing a foul on Brian Gutiérrez in the 69th minute with Jiménez coolly converting from the spot.

The final 20 minutes was a masterclass in survival, the 10 man England side resisting a relentless Mexican onslaught thanks to Pickford who commanded his area with authority.

England's Path to the Final

By conquering the Azteca, England have set up another heavyweight clash in the quarter-finals. The Three Lions head to the Miami Stadium where they will face Norway on Saturday, 11 July.

The Scandinavian side are equally confident after a 2-1 upset over Brazil thanks to two goals from Erling Haaland. The winner of that clash will earn a spot in the semi-finals against Argentina, Egypt, Switzerland or Colombia.
