Gor Mahia vs Vipers CECAFA Kagame Cup Preview

Kenya’s Gor Mahia and Vipers of Uganda will be looking to build on opening day wins when they clash in their second Group A fixture at the CECAFA Kagame Cup.

Both teams looked sharp going forward in their first fixtures and could be set to serve up a thrilling contest on Monday.

Key Stats

  • Gor Mahia have scored in five of their last seven matches in all competitions.
  • Gor Mahia have conceded in three of their five matches in all competitions.
  • Vipers have scored in eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions.
  • Both teams were on target in their only previous meeting.

One Previous Meeting

The only previous meeting between Gor Mahia and Vipers was a quarter-final clash at the 2018 CECAFA Clubs Cup. The Kenyans claimed a 2-1 victory to progress to the last four.

Solid Start for Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia began their Kagame Cup campaign with a comfortable 5-0 victory over APR. They were untroubled throughout and had five different scorers, with Michael Kibwage, Leslie Otieno and Patrick Essombe all among the goals.

It was a solid return to action for Gor Mahia, who had not played since the end of the Kenyan Premier League back in May. The result also continued their solid run of form, having gone unbeaten in eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions.

That opening fixture showed Gor Mahia's attacking quality, and they have scored in five of their last seven matches in all competitions. However, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in three of the last five fixtures in this run.

Vipers Stepping up to the Plate

Vipers were also comfortable in their opening fixture as they eased to a 3-0 victory over CF GR/SIAF. The game was effectively over before the break, with a brace from Farouk Miya and a Karim Watambala effort giving them a halftime lead.

Like the Kenyans, Vipers had also not been in action since May and showed little rustiness on Friday. That result means they are now unbeaten in their last 10 matches in all competitions.

Beyond the win, another major positive for Vipers is that they were able to show their attacking quality in the opening fixture. That display was not a fluke as they have scored in eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions.

Team News and Predicted Line-ups

Gor Mahia (4-3-3): Bryne Omondi; Daniel Sakkari, Michael Kibwage, Frank Odhiambo, Siraj Mohammed; Alpha Onyango, Enoch Machaka, Jackson Dwang, David Okoth, Patrick Essombe, Paul Okoth.

Gor Mahia are expected to stick with the team that claimed the comfortable victory in the opening fixture. Kibwage and Odhiambo should continue in defence while Essombe should lead the line once again.

Vipers (4-3-3): Loyce Mbaba; Achraf Mandela, Hilary Mukundane, Kevin Dasylva, Nicholas Mwere; Joel Sserunjogi, Karim Watambala, Farouk Miya; Odili Chukwuma, Arafati Usama, Gusto Mulongo.

Vipers are also not expected to make changes to the team that won on Friday, with Miya set to retain his place after netting a brace. Usama should feature in attack while Mukundane and Dasylva are set to continue at the back.

Verdict

Gor Mahia and Vipers claimed comfortable victories in their opening fixtures and will be looking to establish some dominance in Group A.

They will be fired up for this one, and given the attacking quality on display, both teams are expected to score here.
