City Hold the Historical Edge

Manchester City have been more successful in previous head-to-head meetings with Brighton, recording 19 wins from 31 encounters, while the Seagulls claimed eight victories.

Guardiola’s Side Creating Plenty but Leaving Points Behind

Manchester City have suffered a couple of frustrating setbacks in the Premier League recently, dropping six points behind leaders Arsenal after 20 rounds, despite remaining the league’s most efficient attack with 44 goals scored.

The Cityzens dominated pitch and created the better chances in their 2026 opener against Sunderland, but the match finished goalless. Guardiola’s side posted 2.24-0.88 xG, enjoyed 68% possession and outshot the visitors 14-10.

Another slip followed last weekend at the Etihad against Chelsea. Tijani Reijnders put City ahead just before half-time, but a stoppage-time concession forced them to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Brighton Regained Confidence

Brighton are currently positioned mid-table in the Premier League with 28 points from 20 matches, having produced mixed results throughout December.

After pushing league leaders Arsenal in a narrow 2-1 defeat, the Seagulls closed out 2025 with a 2-2 away draw at West Ham, twice coming from behind through goals from Danny Welbeck (who also missed a penalty) and Joel Veltman.

Last weekend, Fabian Hürzeler’s side delivered a solid home performance against Burnley, winning 2-0 while limiting the visitors to just 0.30 xG. Georginio Rutter and Yasin Ayari were on the scoresheet.

Predicted Lineups & Team News

Manchester City (4-3-3) Gianluigi Donnarumma, Rico Lewis, Abdukodir Khusanov, Nathan Ake, Nico OReilly, Rodri, Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden, Tijjani Reijnders, Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland

Man City’s injury list got lengthier with recent injuries of Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias, joining John Stones, Oscar Bobb, Mateo Kovacic and Savinho on the sidelines. Omar Marmoush and Rayan Ait Nouri are on international duty at AFCON.

Brighton (4-2-3-1) Bart Verbruggen, Joel Veltman, Lewis Dunk, Jan Paul van Hecke, Ferdi Kadioglu, Carlos Gomez, Yasin Ayari, Brajan Gruda, Georginio Rutter, Kaoru Mitoma, Stefanos Kostoulas

Solly March is unavailable due to a knee injury for Brighton, Yankuba Minteh out with a thigh injury, while Mats Wieffer is doubtful. Carlos Baleba is with his national team at AFCON.

Verdict

Man City v Brighton

Brighton have solid scoring potential and I like their chances of finding the net in Manchester, but hosts are ahead in terms of quality by far. Pep Guardiola’s side is tipped to win with BTTS.
