Nigeria vs Morocco Preview

It’s crunch time in the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria and Morocco fighting for a spot in the final.

The hosts have been favourites since day one, but the Super Eagles have the best attack in the competition and deserve plenty of respect in Rabat.

Key Stats - Osimhen & Diaz on Fire

  • Nigeria are undefeated in 12 of their last 13 matches.
  • Nigeria have won by 2+ goals in their last 3 matches.
  • Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen has scored 18 goals in his last 18 matches.
  • Morocco are undefeated in their last 22 matches.
  • Morocco have won 15 of their last 18 matches.
  • Morocco’s Brahim Diaz has scored in his last 5 matches.

HTH - Advantage Morocco

Morocco have a 6-3 advantage over Nigeria with only one draw.

They last met in the 2018 African Nations Championship final, Morocco winning 4-0 with Zakaria Hadraf scoring two goals.

Nigeria 5-0 at AFCON

Nigeria failed to keep a clean sheet in the group stage but still won all three matches. Alex Iwobi assisted Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman in a 2-1 win against Tanzania.

Lookman and Victor Osimhen found the net to build a 3-0 lead over Tunisia, they conceded twice in a 3-2 victory. Uganda were reduced to 10 men before the hour mark, Raphael Onyedika scoring twice as Eric Chelle’s side won 3-1 in Fez.

The Super Eagles’ defensive concerns were eased in a comprehensive 4-0 win against Mozambique. They had 2.82-0.10 xG with their front three on fire, Lookman and Akor Adams scoring twice and Osimhen bagging a brace.

Osimhen opened the scoring in the quarter-finals, a 2-0 victory against Algeria. Adams found the net again as Nigeria ended with 3.36-0.13 xG, the second straight match they gave their opponents next to no chance.
Chelle was pleased with the win but is not taking it for granted, saying: “It was a great game. We played well to win this game, and I’m so proud of them. We work a lot and deserve this victory.”

“This is just one game. If you want to stay ambitious, you have to work again because we have a big game in a few days. We will continue to work.”

Morocco Remain Favourites to Win AFCON

Morocco have conceded only one goal at AFCON where they remain tournament favourites. They beat Comoros 2-0 before ending with 15-5 shots and 2.82-0.91 xG in a 1-1 draw against Mali, Brahim Diaz scoring in both wins.

The Atlas Lions dominated Zambia in their final group game, Ayoub El Kaabi scoring twice and Diaz finding the net again in a 3-0 victory.

The Real Madrid winger continued his fine form against Tanzania, netting in a comprehensive 1-0 win. Walid Regragui’s side had 71% possession and 12-4 shots in the Round of 16 which included 4-1 on target.

Morocco got the job done against Cameroon in the quarter-finals, winning 2-0 in Rabat. It was little surprise that Diaz scored first, Ismael Saibari wrapping it up in the second half as their opponents ended with 0.46 xG.
Regragui thanked the home supporters and praised Brahim Diaz after the win, saying: “I want to thank the players and the fans. It truly felt like we were playing with 12 players on the pitch. Qualifying for the semi-finals is well deserved, and the players earned it.”

“I congratulate Cameroon for a strong performance and their coach for his good work. Our players gave everything, and when they stay focused, things go well. I am very happy with what they showed.”

“Brahim Diaz is a special player, and I congratulate him for his performances. We must remain humble because every team wants to beat us, and we must respect all our opponents. Since 2004, Morocco had not reached the semi-finals, and now we are aiming to write history.”

Morocco Confirmed Line Up & Team News

Morocco (4-1-4-1) Yassine Bounou; Achraf Hakimi, Nayef Aguerd, Adam Masina, Noussair Mazraoui; , Neil El Aynaoui; Brahim Diaz, Bilal El Khannouss, Ismael Saibari, Abdessamad Ezzalzouli; Ayoub El Kaabi

Walid Regragui has stuck with the same side that started against Cameroon. Sofyan Amrabat came off the bench in the 2-0 win and is on the bench once again.

Romain Saiss picked up a hamstring injury against Comoros and is still out of the squad. Adam Masina continues to partner Nayef Aguerd in central defence.

Verdict

Morocco have been reliant on Brahim Diaz at AFCON while Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams have combined to score nine goals.

The home crowd could be silenced in Rabat where the Super Eagles have enough attacking threat to spoil the party.
