Plymouth vs Exeter Preview

Plymouth are in top form and win a lot of matches. Exeter lost to lower-league opponents in pre-season and a home win with over 2.5 goals is predicted on Monday.

Key Stats - Pilgrims Look Strong

  • Plymouth have won 7 of their last 8 games.
  • Plymouth have seen BTTS in 8 of their last 10 home matches.
  • Exeter have lost 2 of their last 3 away games.

H2H - Plymouth Advantage

Plymouth have a 38-30 advantage against Exeter, alongside 27 draws.

Plymouth Are in Excellent Form

Plymouth are on a 12-match unbeaten run and have won nine. The Pilgrims ended the 2025/26 League One season as one of the most in-form teams, taking 11 points from five games.

Argyle continued their unbeaten run into pre-season and won their opening four matches, scoring nine goals. That winning run ended with a 0-0 home draw with Championship side Bristol City.

The Pilgrims replied with a 4-1 triumph at Tavistock on Tuesday. Plymouth conceded after 15 minutes and Brendan Wiredu, James Sharpe and Caleb Roberts got on the scoresheet.

Exeter Rarely Win

Exeter were relegated from League One last season and finished 21st in the table. The Grecians failed to win 19 of their final 20 games in 2025/26.

The Devon outfit confirmed Matt Taylor as their new manager in pre-season. Taylor oversaw defeats against Truro 1-0 and Torquay 2-1 and a 2-0 win against Weston Super-Mere in his first three games.

The League Two outfit’s patchy form continued with a 1-1 draw against Bristol City. Reece Cole opened the scoring just before half time and Exeter conceded in the closing stages.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Plymouth (4-4-2): Murphy Cooper; Wes Harding, Alex Mitchell, Mathias Ross, Alex Hartridge; Ronan Curtis, Bradley Ibrahim, Malachi Boateng, Harvey White; Aribim Pepple, Will Evans

Midfielder Michael Baidoo is sidelined with a long-term hamstring injury.

Plymouth confirmed the signing of striker Will Evans from Mansfield Town on Friday. The forward is available for selection against Exeter.

Exeter (4-2-3-1): Jack Bycroft; Ed Turns, Edward James, Jack Fitzwater, Luca Woodhouse; Charlie Cummins, Tom Dean; Sonny Cox, Reece Cole, Josh Gordon; Jayden Wareham

Exeter have no injuries or suspensions.

Jayden Wareham is likely to start up front against Plymouth. The striker scored 21 goals in all competitions last season.

Verdict

Plymouth have enough quality to beat a struggling Exeter side. A home victory with over 2.5 goals is the best bet in the EFL Cup first round.
