Spain's World Cup journey has been impressive, maintaining a perfect defensive record and dominating their matches, including a 3-0 win over Austria. Portugal also arrive in form, with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the attack and a dramatic comeback win over Croatia. With both teams boasting strong stats and depth, this classic Iberian rivalry is predicted to be tightly contested. Experts expect a draw in regular time, with the balance likely tipping during extra time.

Spain are yet to concede a goal at the World Cup, La Roja hardly giving their opponents a chance. Portugal are a step up in class however and have proved they can match it with the Iberian neighbours, this one set to go to extra time.

HTH - Draws a Regular Occurrence

Spain have a long history against Portugal, leading 17-6 alongside 18 draws.

They last met in the 2025 UEFA Nations League final, Portugal emerging victorious in a penalty shootout after the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Seleção Still Alive

Portugal started the World Cup with a 1-1 draw against a determined DR Congo side. João Neves scored early on but it turned out to be their only shot on target despite enjoying 75% possession.

The Seleção then thrashed Uzbekistan 5-0 with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice on seven shots. The group stage ended with a disappointing 0-0 draw against Colombia, ending the contest with 45% possession, 13-24 shots and 0.92-1.70 xG.

Roberto Martinez’s side came through a thrilling Round of 32 clash against Croatia. Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot and Gonçalo Ramos headed home Rafael Leão’s cross in added time to seal a 2-1 victory.

Portugal Team News & Predicted Line Up

Rafael Leão will hope to keep his spot in the starting side and Pedro Neto’s spot could be under threat. João Félix and Francisco Conceição are the players in contention to start out wide.

Portugal (4-2-3-1): Diogo Costa; João Cancelo; Rúben Dias, Renato Veiga, Nuno Mendes; Vitinha, João Neves; Pedro Neto, Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leão; Cristiano Ronaldo

La Roja Yet to be Breached

Spain’s World Cup campaign began with a 0-0 draw against Cabo Verde but there was little to be concerned about. They had 74% possession and 27-6 shots, Ferran Torres hitting the woodwork in the first half.

Luis de la Fuente's side crushed Saudi Arabia 4-0 with Mikel Oyarzabal registering two goals and an assist, limiting their opponents to 0.13 xG. Alex Baena scored in a 1-0 win against Uruguay, a game of very few chances.

La Roja were far too good for Austria in the Round of 32, emerging with a 3-0 victory in Los Angeles. Oyarzabal bagged another brace, taking his tally to 29 goals in 57 internationals.

Spain Team News & Predicted Line Up

Expect to see Luis de la Fuente stick with the same side that started against Austria. Mikel Oyarzabal has scored four goals at the World Cup.

Spain (4-2-3-1): Unai Simón; Pedro Porro, Pau Cubarsi, Aymeric Laporte, Marc Cucurella; Rodri, Pedri; Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Alex Baena; Mikel Oyarzabal

Verdict

Spain are deserved favourites after keeping four consecutive clean sheets at the World Cup. La Roja will have plenty of support, but I think Portugal have enough weapons to keep this one close and take it to extra time.
