Rangers and Celtic gear up for a pivotal Old Firm derby, with Rangers holding the edge in recent matchups and a robust home record at Ibrox. Rangers are expected to continue their scoring streak against Celtic, who have shown defensive vulnerabilities recently. Both teams have injury concerns to contend with, adding layers of complexity to their strategies. The outcome of this derby has significant implications in the ongoing Premiership title race, as Rangers sit just behind league leaders Hearts.

Rangers vs Celtic Predictions

Rangers have had the edge in recent encounters against Celtic, and with a strong home record, should be fancied to pick up the points in Sunday's crucial derby clash.

I fancy the Gers to score twice while claiming a huge win at Ibrox.

Gers Dominant at Ibrox

  • Rangers won their last 10 home matches
  • Rangers scored 2+ goals in 10 of their last 12 matches (domestic fixtures)
  • Rangers scored 2+ goals in 4 of their last 7 matches against Celtic
  • Celtic lost 3 of their last 5 matches against Rangers
  • Celtic conceded 2+ goals in 6 of their last 10 matches

Rangers Hold Narrow H2H Advantage

Rangers and Celtic will meet for the 450th time this weekend. Rangers now lead the H2H record with 172 wins, to Celtic's 171 after a dominant 3-1 victory at Parkhead earlier this year.

Celtic have failed to win five of their last six encounters, while they have not won at Ibrox since 2023.

Gers Trip-Up at Livi

Rangers return to Ibrox after dropping points in a third successive away Premiership fixture last weekend. The Gers looked set for a shock defeat at bottom-of-the-table Livingston before late goals from Emmanuel Fernandez and Mikey Moore rescued a point for Danny Rohl's side.

Despite generating an xG of 3.59 and having 31 shots on goal, the Gers were unable to capitalise on their dominance at Almondvale.

The Gers have been in superb form at Ibrox, though, securing ten successive victories across all competitions since a goalless draw against Falkirk last November.

With ten games still to play in a thrilling Premiership title race, Rangers sit four points behind league leaders Hearts, but two clear of Celtic.

Celtic Bounce Back in Germany

Celtic made a surprise return to winning form with a hard-fought 1-0 second-leg victory against Stuttgart in their Europa League play-off on Thursday.

Luke McGowan’s first-minute goal gave the Hoops hope of overturning a 4-1 first-leg deficit, but the Bhoys were unable to complete the comeback and exited the competition 4-2 on aggregate.

Martin O'Neill's side now turn their attention to the Old Firm derby after a 2-1 defeat against Hibernian in last weekend's Premiership fixture.

The Hoops’ defensive frailties have been exposed this year, with 16 goals conceded in their last ten games. Celtic failed to keep a clean sheet in five successive fixtures before their surprise win in Germany on Thursday.

On the road, the Hoops have been surprisingly vulnerable, losing four of 13 away Premiership fixtures. O'Neill's Bhoys have only a +2 goal difference from those fixtures (W7, D2, L4).

Predicted Lineups and Team News

Rangers (4-2-2-2) Jack Butland; James Tavernier, John Souttar, Emmanuel Fernandez, Tuur Rommens; Nicolas Raskin, Tochi Chukwuani; Mikey Moore, Mohamed Diomande; Youssef Chermiti, Ryan Naderi

Rangers boss Rohl has four players unavailable for Sunday's crunch Old Firm contest. Bailey Rice, Derek Cornelius, and Connor Barron miss out, while Dujon Sterling is the latest name to join the Gers' injury list.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Rohl admitted this could be the biggest match of his managerial career given the stakes.

“It’s a crucial one because as you get closer to the end of the season, you know every game carries added importance,” he said.

Celtic (4-3-3) Viljami Sinisalo; Julian Araujo, Dane Murray, Liam Scales, Marcello Saracchi; Benjamin Nygren, Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate; Sebastian Tounekti, Tomas Cvancara, Daizen Maeda.

Interim boss O’Neill has selection decisions to consider after a much-changed Celtic XI secured a surprise victory in Germany. Viljami Sinisalo could retain his place in goal, while Dane Murray is expected to continue in the back four.

Arne Engels, Alistair Johnston, Callum Osmand, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota remain sidelined with long-term injuries. Auston Trusty is also unavailable after his dismissal for violent conduct against Hibernian.

Rangers boss Rohl questioned Celtic’s team selection after their Europa League defeat to Stuttgart, suggesting the Hoops could have approached the tie differently. O’Neill responded with typical gusto.

“So he’s picking our team? Well done, old Danny, well done. He’s only in less than a year himself. He’ll soon know all about it in the next four or five years.”

Verdict

Rangers should have enough momentum at Ibrox to claim a vital victory in Sunday's Old Firm derby. I fancy the hosts to score two goals or more while picking up a massive win at Ibrox.
