Senegal officially cemented their status as one of the teams to beat in Morocco following a gritty 1-0 quarter-final victory over Mali.

While they haven't always been the most explosive side in the tournament, eight different players have contributed to score 11 goals. Their trademark defensive resilience has made Pape Thiaw’s side a formidable force.

The Lions of Teranga have highlighted their pedigree by reaching their fourth semi-final in the last five editions.

Road to the Semi-Finals

Date Stage Opponent Result Scorers
Dec 23, 2025 Group D Botswana W 3-0 Nicolas Jackson (2), Cherif Ndiaye
Dec 27, 2025 Group D DR Congo D 1-1 Sadio Mane
Dec 30, 2025 Group D Benin W 3-0 Abdoulaye Seck, Habib Diallo, Cherif Ndiaye
Jan 3, 2026 Round of 16 Sudan W 3-1 Pape Gueye (2), Ibrahim Mbaye
Jan 9, 2026 Quarter-Final Mali W 1-0 Iliman Ndiaye

Key Players

Kalidou Koulibaly (Al Hilal): The heartbeat of the team and emotional reference point, Koulibaly's return from suspension for the Mali game brought a visible calm to the backline. Senegal have now kept three clean sheets in five matches.

Pape Gueye (Villarreal): His brace against Benin showed his attacking threat, but his real value is his engine room partnership with Idrissa Gueye, providing the platform for Senegal's attackers to flourish.

Iliman Ndiaye (Everton): The winger was a surprise starter in the quarter-finals but proved his worth with the winning goal. His ability to find pockets of space and clinical finishing in tight games makes him the X-factor in the absence of a peak-form Sadio Mane.
Sadio Mane (Al Nassr): Despite scoring on goal at AFCON, a low number by his high standards, Sadio Mane's impact can't be underestimated. The winger has provided three assists and his ability to trouble defenders opens passing lanes and allows Senegal’s counter-attacks to gain structure.

Path to the Final

Senegal will remain in Tangier for their semi-final clash on Wednesday, January 14. They will face Egypt who have been below their best but are always a threat due to Mohamed Salah.

A repeat of the 2021 final, Egypt's knockout pedigree is legendary but Senegal’s 16-match unbeaten run at AFCON gives them the psychological edge.

Should they progress, they will face hosts Morocco or Nigeria in the final on January 18 in Rabat. A final against Morocco would be a clash of titans between the favorites while Nigeria are top scorers at the tournament.

Quotes

Pape Thiaw: "It was not an easy match because we played against a very talented Mali team but we achieved our objective. The Mali team has good qualities and they created many challenges for us."

"If we had been more clinical in front of goal we could have scored more goals but what is more important today is for us to have qualified for the semi-final."
"We will look into our errors and look to correct them for our future matches. We hope that we will be more efficient in front of goal and have more luck in future."

Iliman Ndiaye: "I am happy to have won this (man of the match) award but the most important thing is that we have progressed to the semi-finals of the competition."

"We played very well today and it shows that we are improving match after match. I am confident that my colleagues and I will focus on the next match to play at our best level and deliver for our fans."
