Sporting CP simply have to win here as they see second spot slip out of their grasp. A home game against Tondela is a perfect opportunity, the Lions to get it done with a clean sheet.

HTH - Lions Searching for Nine Straight

Sporting CP have won eight consecutive matches against Tondela, leading 16-2 alongside three draws.

Sporting Slip to Third

Sporting’s season is coming to a disappointing end after winning one of their last six matches. They went out to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals and lost 2-1 at home to Benfica.

The Lions have something to look forward to after reaching the Portuguese Cup final. A 1-0 victory over Porto in the semi-final first leg was followed by a 0-0 draw despite having 2-18 shots.

Rui Borges’ side are coming off a damaging 1-1 draw at AVS that puts their top two spot at serious risk. Rafael Nel opened the scoring but it wasn’t enough, Hidemasa Morita conceding a penalty as they ended with 75% possession and 3.36-1.66 xG.

The manager spoke about fatigue and injuries affecting his squad: "We've had many demanding games and the overload is real. Today it was impossible not to make changes to the team, it was impossible not to manage the squad.

"The team has given everything, today they gave everything, but we weren't able to win the game. We knew we would pay the price in some way, but we believed that with our will we would be able to overcome it."

Drop Looking Likely for Tondela

Tondela are running out of time as relegation becomes increasingly likely. Gonçalo Feio recently replaced Cristiano Bacci but their form has not improved.

The new manager saw his side thrashed 5-0 at Vitoria de Guimaraes before a 98th minute equaliser salvaged a 2-2 draw against Gil Vicente.

The promoted club had 0.13-3.15 xG in a 2-0 defeat at Porto before returning home. Tondela improved but couldn’t score once again, losing 2-0 to Nacional.

Feio continues to be optimistic despite the relegation concerns: "We had chances to score in the first half, and in the second as well, and I think that would have changed the energy in the stands quite a bit.

"We created many chances, but we couldn't score. The result was bad for us, but there are four games left and it's not over yet."

Predicted Lineups & Team News

Sporting CP (4-2-3-1) Rui Silva; Georgios Vagiannidis, Ousmane Diomande, Zeno Debast, Maxi Araújo; Hidemasa Morita, Daniel Bragança; Geny Catamo, Trincao, Pote; Luis Suarez

Gonçalo Inácio and Morten Hjulmand continue to miss out here. Expect Ricardo Mangas, Daniel Bragança, Geny Catamo and Luis Suárez to start.

Tondela (5-4-1) Bernardo Fontes; Bebeto, Joao Silva, Christian Marques, Brayan Medina, Rémy Vita; Pedro Maranhao, Joe Hodge, Juanse Rodriguez, Moudjatovic Ouattara; Rony Lopes

Christian Marques could return to central defence here if Feio goes with a back three. Pedro Maranhao is available after suspension.

Verdict

Tondela suffered a 3-0 defeat at Porto less than two weeks ago and were never in the contest. A similar result is expected in Lisbon where Sporting should be far too strong.
