Aryna Sabalenka enters the Brisbane tournament as a strong favorite, having dominated her previous matches with no signs of vulnerability. Her opponent, Madison Keys, has faced numerous challenges, including a grueling match against Diana Shnaider. Sabalenka's track record of success in big rounds, along with her current form, suggests she is poised to secure a decisive win. Keys, despite having a positive streak in Australian tournaments, will need to significantly elevate her performance to match Sabalenka's prowess.

Sabalenka has started this event on much firmer footing, while Keys is still prone to swings in level. Even in a marquee matchup like this, the world number one looks well positioned to take control and finish it in straight sets.

Key Stats - Proven Performers in Big Rounds

  • Sabalenka went 10–2 in quarterfinals last season and reached 12 semifinals overall
  • Sabalenka won 15 of 20 matches against top-10 players in 2025
  • Keys was a Brisbane finalist in her last appearance in 2020
  • Keys owns seven career semifinals in Australia, including titles in Adelaide and the Australian Open last year

Sabalenka in Familiar Territory

Sabalenka is right back at home in Brisbane. She cruised past Cristina Bucsa without facing a break point, then handled Sorana Cirstea 6–3, 6–3 while striking more than twice as many winners as errors.

Brisbane continues to look like one of her most comfortable stops on tour. She was runner-up here two years ago before lifting the trophy in 2025, a run that launched one of her strongest seasons.

Holding world number one throughout 2025, with finals across majors, WTA 1000s and the WTA Finals, underlined just how high her level remains. It’s also why she tops our outright list this week, where we’ve tipped Sabalenka as the favourite to win the tournament in our full WTA Brisbane preview.

A Long Road Already for Keys

Keys was dragged into a brutal three-hour battle with Diana Shnaider, with all three sets decided by tiebreaks.

She had to come back from a set and a break down and take a medical timeout for her left thigh before finally closing out a 6–7, 7–6, 7–6 win.

It was far from smooth, but it got her through. Given she arrived in Brisbane without a match win since Cincinnati in mid-August, reaching the quarterfinals in her first event of the new season will feel like a positive step.

She had earlier beaten McCartney Kessler 6–4, 6–3, and her broader Australian form remains a major plus. That result extended her winning streak on Australian hard courts to 14 matches.

Verdict

Sabalenka has been in full control so far, while Keys has had to grind and scrape her way through. With that contrast in form, this shapes up as a matchup the world number one should dominate, with a straight-sets win the expected outcome.
