In the upcoming Brisbane match, Aryna Sabalenka is expected to dominate Sorana Cirstea. Sabalenka has a history of strong performances against non top-20 players and has consistently reached the latter stages of tournaments. Meanwhile, Cirstea, despite a late-career resurgence and impressive victories, struggles against world number one players. The head-to-head record between Sabalenka and Cirstea is currently tied, but Sabalenka's recent form in Brisbane and overall confidence suggest she will likely win in straight sets.

This is a big step up in class for Cirstea. Her past results against world number one players show a clear pattern, and facing Sabalenka in her current form, it’s hard to see anything other than a comfortable, likely straight-sets win for the top seed.

Stats - Sabalenka’s Clear Statistical Edge

  • Sabalenka is 41–4 vs non top-20 players since early 2025
  • Sabalenka has made the quarterfinals or better at every event since Indian Wells

Sabalenka Sends Early Statement in Brisbane

Sabalenka opened her campaign in ruthless fashion, crushing Cristina Bucsa 6–0, 6–1 in just 48 minutes without facing a single break point. It was a reminder of how quickly she can shut the door when she finds her rhythm.

Brisbane has become a stronghold for her. Since debuting here two years ago, she’s reached the final twice, finishing runner-up in 2024 before lifting the trophy at the last edition.

She arrives with the confidence of a world number one who backed it up all season. Finals at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Indian Wells and the WTA Finals, plus titles in Miami and at the US Open, underline the level she’s bringing into this title defence.

It’s why we have Sabalenka installed as our outright favourite to win the WTA Brisbane title, which we’ve broken down in full in our tournament preview.

Late-Career Spark for Cirstea

Cirstea announced her retirement plans last month and opened her final season in style, taking out 14th seed Jelena Ostapenko 6–2, 7–6.

She fired 11 aces and dropped just one service game, adding to an earlier straight-sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. It continued a solid late-career run.

Cirstea worked her way back inside the top 50 last season after slipping as low as 169 in June, showing a real resurgence in form.

Quarterfinals in Dubai and Austin set the platform, before her North American swing delivered the biggest lift. A fourth round in Cincinnati and the Cleveland title underlined that she can still put together strong weeks when conditions suit.

Verdict

Cirstea is running into the very top level here, and history says this is where her road usually ends. With Sabalenka’s power and current form, this sets up as a one-way matchup, and a straight-sets win for the world number one is the expected outcome.
