Norrie Going the Distance


Cameron Norrie took some time to get going this year, his first quarter-final appearance coming in Indian Wells where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.

The 30-year-old started the clay court swing in Monte Carlo where he suffered a 3 sets second round defeat to Alex de Minaur. 

The Brit continued with the long matches in Barcelona, getting past Stan Wawrinka and Ethan Quinn in 3 sets. He lost 6-3 6-2 to Rafael Jodar in the quarters, winning only 40% of his 1st serves.

Machac Finding Some Form on Clay


Tomas Machac won the Adelaide International in January but a poor end to the hard court swing saw him drop out of the Top 50.

Switching to clay has seen a slight upturn in form, despite a defeat to Rafael Jodar in his opening match in Marrakech. He suffered a narrow 6-1 6-7 6-3 third round loss to Jannik Sinner in Monte Carlo.

The 25-year-old competed in Barcelona last week, losing 6-4 6-3 against Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals.

The Czech fell behind in his opening match in Madrid. He came back to beat Francisco Comesana 3-6 7-6 6-3, winning 64% of his 2nd serves in the final two sets.

Verdict

Long matches have been the norm for Cameron Norrie and Tomas Machac. Both HTH encounters have gone deep so I am sticking with another close clash in Madrid.
