Carlos Alcaraz, the World No.1, faces Karen Khachanov in the Qatar Open. Alcaraz enters the match with a strong record, boasting wins in 63 of his last 68 matches and having dropped only one set in prior meetings with Khachanov. Despite Khachanov's previous success in Qatar, including a title in 2024, he has struggled against top players lately. The match is predicted to exceed 19.5 games, driven by Alcaraz's robust form and Khachanov's potential to challenge. Alcaraz is favored for another victory over Khachanov.

Carlos Alcaraz hasn’t had it all his own way in Qatar where Karen Khachanov won the title in 2024. The World No.1 is super short in the betting odds once again, this one to go over 19.5 games.

Alcaraz Getting it Done in Doha

Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open and US Open last year, two of eight titles. He lost to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final but has been World No.1 since September.

The Spaniard started 2026 with a new coach after Samuel Lopez replaced Juan Carlos Ferrero. It paid immediate dividends as he won the Australian Open, becoming the youngest man to win the Career Grand Slam.

The 22-year-old didn’t drop a set on the way to the semi-finals where he got past Alexander Zverev in 5 sets. He had a shaky start in the final before coming back to beat Novak Djokovic 2-6 6-2 6-3 7-5.

Alcaraz had a solid workout in his opening match in Qatar, defeating Arthur Rinderknech 6-4 7-6 before saving 4/5 break points in a 6-2 7-5 second round victory over Valentin Royer.

He was glad to win the contest in straight sets, saying: "There were some moments when I thought about a third set, I’m not going to lie, but obviously it was just a small place in my mind that was thinking that. The rest was working to find solutions, to find the right way again."

"I’m just really pleased and really happy I was able to find good rhythm again, and good tennis. It’s just about fighting. I know tennis."

"It’s just about one point, and sometimes it is really difficult to close out the set or the match. I just had to stay there, and I’m happy I turned it around and got the win in straight sets."

Khachanov Former Champion in Qatar

Karen Khachanov hasn’t won a title since 2024 but remains entrenched in the Top 20. That position is in jeopardy after a poor start to the year.

The Russian is 5-3 which includes a 1-2 record against Top 50 players. He went out in the first round in Hong Kong before a third round exit to Luciano Darderi at the Australian Open.

The 29-year-old lost to Jaume Munar in the second round in Rotterdam and has been taken the distance twice in Doha.

Khachanov beat Shintaro Mochizuki 6-1 3-6 6-4 and Marton Fucsovics 6-2 4-6 6-4, winning less than 46% of his 2nd serves and saving a combined 7/11 break points.

Verdict

Karen Khachanov won Qatar Open in 2024 but has lost seven of his previous nine matches against Top 50 players. The Russian can keep this close, but a sixth straight defeat to Carlos Alcaraz is on the cards.
