Gauff Battles Past Mertens in Dubai Thriller

Coco Gauff battled into the Dubai quarterfinals with a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 comeback win over Elise Mertens. She squandered a break lead in the second set and saved three match points before turning the match around.

It marks her fourth quarterfinal appearance in Dubai. She lost two of her previous three at this stage, with her best result being a semifinal run in 2023.

Since her Australian Open quarterfinal exit, Gauff has looked below her usual level, struggling in all three matches she has played.

She holds a 5-4 record in quarterfinals since the start of 2025, with four of those wins coming at WTA 1000 events.

Eala Eyes Semifinal Repeat After Miami Magic

Alexandra Eala powered into the quarterfinals with back-to-back straight-sets wins over Jasmine Paolini and Sorana Cirstea. Despite a brief wobble, she controlled most of both matches.

This is her second WTA 1000 quarterfinal after Miami last year, where she stunned Jelena Ostapenko, Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys en route to the semifinals.

It marks her third tour-level quarterfinal of 2026 and fourth across all levels, adding to her semifinal in Auckland and quarterfinals in Abu Dhabi and WTA 125 Manila.

Eala holds a 3-2 record against top-10 opponents, with all five meetings coming at WTA 1000 events.

Verdict

Alexandra Eala has enjoyed a standout week, taking down three higher-ranked players, but Coco Gauff’s superior experience and reliability on this surface should give her the advantage in this matchup.
