The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is back and it is one of the headline stops on the Middle East swing. It is played at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre and has been on the WTA calendar since 2001. Over the years it has grown into a proper WTA 1000 event and it always pulls in a stacked field early in the season.

This one is played on outdoor hard courts in Dubai and the conditions usually reward players who like to strike first and play on the front foot. The 2026 edition carries a total commitment of $4,088,211, with a 56 player singles draw and a 28 team doubles field. It is a big week for points and momentum, so you tend to see the top names locked in from the start.

Past champions like Justine Henin, Venus Williams, Elina Svitolina, Simona Halep and defending champion Mirra Andreeva have all left their mark here. Dubai has a habit of producing big statement wins and deep runs that shape the early part of the season. It is one of those events where you quickly see who is ready to contend at the biggest tournaments this year.

Owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free, this event runs under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and remains one of the key sporting stops in the region. It has the backing, the setup and the reputation of a top tier week on tour.

Since 2023, Dubai holds permanent WTA 1000 status after years of alternating between 500 and 1000 level. It was also one of the earlier events in tennis to introduce equal prize money for men and women, which adds to its standing as a serious and progressive stop.

The women headline the first week, then the ATP 500 takes over at the same venue. So you get a full two week tennis run in Dubai with elite fields and plenty of big matches to track across both tours.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed Analysis

Dubai plays on medium fast outdoor hard courts with a speed rating around 0.85 to 0.95. The bounce is fairly high, which suits players who hit through the ball clean and take time away from opponents. With daytime temperatures around 24 to 28°C, light winds and dry air, the ball moves quick and first strike tennis gets rewarded.

Night sessions are a bit cooler and the courts slow slightly, so rallies can stretch out more. Still, this is a week that favors players who step in, hold serve well and dictate from the baseline rather than sit back and defend. Controlled aggression and clean ball striking usually go a long way here.

Title Trends
  • Power baseliners with aggressive returns have dominated.
  • Finals frequently feature at least one Top 10 calibre player.
  • Tie-break sets are common due to strong serving conditions.
  • Breakthrough champions emerge, but only if their baseline level is elite for the week.

The transition from alternating WTA 500 and WTA 1000 status to a permanent WTA 1000 event has only strengthened the field quality, increasing depth and reducing the margin for error.

The top of the draw in Dubai is stacked with elite hard-court performers and former champions. With multiple Top 10 players in peak physical condition, early-round matchups could already feel like quarterfinals.

Players to Watch

Elena Rybakina
Rybakina’s winning streak came to an end in Doha last week, but that defeat may actually work in her favour as she arrives in Dubai fresher than most of her rivals. With Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Świątek absent, the path to the title looks significantly clearer for the world No. 3.

Mirra Andreeva
The defending champion has been in dominant form in recent weeks and now returns to defend valuable ranking points. Dubai’s conditions suit her aggressive shot-making, but the pressure of defending a WTA 1000 title will test her maturity.

Coco Gauff
Gauff’s 2026 form has been underwhelming and her overall level has raised concerns. A three-time quarterfinalist here, she has the history, but she must elevate her serving consistency and forehand control to avoid another disappointing campaign.

Elina Svitolina
One of the most consistent performers this season, Svitolina boasts an outstanding Dubai record with two titles and two additional semifinal runs. Her experience and comfort on these courts make her a serious contender once again.

Verdict

With Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Świątek absent, Elena Rybakina stands out as the clear favourite given her suitability to the Dubai conditions and fresher legs after Doha.

Defending champion Mirra Andreeva shapes as the second strongest title contender if she handles the pressure of defending points. Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina, with her elite record at this venue, represents a dangerous long shot capable of making another deep run.
