Former Champion Svitolina Eyes Third Dubai Crown

Elina Svitolina battled for over three hours and saved six match points to defeat Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 and reach the Dubai final. She even lost a dramatic second-set tiebreak 15-13 before sealing the win.

It continues a remarkable week for the Ukrainian, who was tipped as a 30/1 outright winner in our pre-tournament preview and has now backed that call by reaching the final.

With this run, Svitolina records the longest gap between WTA 1000 finals since the format’s introduction in 2009, ending a 7-year, 277-day wait between Rome 2018 and Dubai 2026.

This is her first WTA 1000 final since 2018. She previously played four finals at this level and won all of them.

Overall, she owns an impressive 19-4 record in tour-level finals, with three of those losses coming against top-10 opponents.

Svitolina has contested two Dubai finals before and won both, defeating Caroline Wozniacki in 2017 and Daria Kasatkina in 2018.

Pegula Becomes Third-Oldest Dubai Finalist

Jessica Pegula produced a stunning comeback to defeat compatriot Amanda Anisimova 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 and reach the Dubai final. She trailed by a set and a break before turning the match around.

This is her first final since Wuhan last year and the 10th at WTA 1000 level or higher in her career.

With this run, Pegula becomes the third-oldest Dubai finalist since the tournament’s inception in 2001, after Venus Williams in 2014 and Nathalie Tauziat in 2001.

She has previously played seven WTA 1000 finals, winning three and losing four, including recent defeats in Miami and Wuhan in 2025. All three of her WTA 1000 titles have come in North America.

Overall, Pegula holds a 10-11 record in tour-level finals and has not lifted a trophy at this level since Toronto 2024. With her current consistency on hard courts, she now eyes another major title.

Player Quotes

“Physios are here trying to help me speed up the recovery. Of course, it's not going to be easy. It's a final. It's important to give your everything. I will do my very best to recover and really be there for this big final. For me, it's important just to keep fighting and trying to do everything that I can. We'll see how it goes.” — Svitolina talking about her physical condition ahead of the final.

Verdict

Elena Svitolina owns the stronger finals record, is a two-time former champion in Dubai, and has recently enjoyed success against American opponents. However, she has spent considerably more time on court this week, which could bring fatigue into play and slightly reduce her chances.

Jessica Pegula, meanwhile, has snapped her semifinal losing streak and arrives with greater consistency and renewed confidence. With momentum on her side, this feels like the opportunity she has been waiting for, and she is unlikely to let it slip.
