Coco Gauff and Anastasia Potapova clash in the French Open's third round, with both players displaying impressive clay-court results. Potapova has surged back into the Top 30, but Gauff’s consistency and record at major events make her the slight favorite. Gauff is undefeated in third-round matches at Roland Garros, turning each appearance into a quarterfinal or better. Defending Champion Yet to Be Seriously Tested

Coco Gauff continued her title defence campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mayar Sherif to reach the third round at Roland Garros. Despite the scoreline, Gauff was broken five times but still converted seven of the 16 break points she created.

This has been a cleaner start for the American compared to several recent tournaments. Before arriving in Paris, she was involved in a number of long battles, playing 12 three-set matches in her previous 16 matches, which often left her with little margin later in events.

Apart from a few disappointing results on clay, Gauff has enjoyed another strong season. She reached the finals in Miami and Rome, the semifinals in Dubai, and the quarterfinals at the Australian Open.

This is her sixth appearance in the third round at the French Open. She has won all five of her previous matches at this stage and turned each of those runs into a quarterfinal appearance or better.

Potapova Building on Recent Results

Anastasia Potapova came from a set down to defeat Katie Boulter 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and reach the third round at the French Open. She was broken five times but converted seven of the 12 break points she created during the match.

The Russian struggled for consistency during the opening months of the season and failed to defend several of her ranking points, which left her close to dropping outside the Top 100.

Since the start of the clay swing, however, her results have improved considerably. Potapova has won 16 of her last 20 matches, reaching the final in Linz, the semifinals in Madrid and the fourth round in Rome, helping her climb back into the Top 30.

She holds a 1-1 record in French Open third-round matches. Potapova lost at this stage to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in 2023 before defeating Wang Xinyu in 2024 to reach the fourth round, her only second-week appearance at a Grand Slam.

Verdict

Anastasia Potapova has shown impressive ability on clay in recent weeks, posting deep runs in every event she has entered. That makes her a dangerous opponent. However, Coco Gauff arrives with strong momentum and is looking to defend her title, which gives her the edge in what should be a tough battle.
